GT4 RS Driving Impressions

992 GT3 is just a fad. Got rid of mine already with no regrets. If I were to get another GT3, it would be a 991, or a 996 if I want a manual. Smaller. 992 improved the turn in but that's about it and still cannot mask the fact that it is a whale of a car. I really hate the size of the 992s, feel like I am in a Panamera instead of a proper 911.🤣
Personally, I think Porsche knocked it out of the park with the GT4 RS - its almost a greatest hits e.g. best engine, best gear box and ratios, best balanced chassis, best looking

I don't like the 992 GT3, you're right it feels like a whale and its also anodyne to drive. It doesn't have the raucous anger of the 991.2 GT3 RS. I agree with you on the 996.2 GT3, great car - very engaging and about the same size as a 981/718 Cayman. Moreover, it feels very close fitting, is a very edgy car close to the limit and is not over powered (about the same torque and little bit more power than the 981 GTS IIRC).

Then I take it to the track and holy crap it’s just so good. This 992 GT3 needs to be driven at high speeds to truly unlock its greatness, anyone who says otherwise doesn’t get it. So then I love it and immediately sign up for another track day the following weekend to drive it more! Hence the love hate.

i have a very love/hate relationship with my 992 GT3, and this is in comparison to owning every GT car over last 10 years. To drive it around town or on the backroads it’s nothing special, in fact it’s a bit nervous because it tramlines so horribly on any pavement imperfections, and in Indiana we have awful roads so it kinda sucks. I enjoyed my Spyder and even the 4 banger 718 GTS much more in comparison. So I get annoyed and don’t like it and want to sell it.

i absolutely adored my Arena Red PTS 991.1 GT3, should have kept it. I loved how it felt and sounded, like it was falling apart, such glorious unfiltered noises. From 991.2 on they engineered all those lovely noises out of the cars and they have always seemed a bit more dull ever since. Traded it in when my 991.1 RS allocation arrived and have always regretted it. Hence why I am so excited for my 4RS, hoping some of that rawness returns
I'm capable of enjoying my .1 on the road, but I enjoy my recently purchased 991.2 TTS on the road much more. Muscular power and superman handling are addictive!

When I compared my 991.1 GT3 with a 991.2 GT3 on track (and in the paddock), I did find that the .2 felt more refined, whereas the .1 felt rawer. The .2 was significantly easier to drive and faster on track, but I enjoyed driving the .1 a little more. Maybe I need to just keep the .1 and not worry about the engine warranty expiring in a couple years.

I can understand that - I suspect there was a meeting in a Porsche engineering dept that went something like this - engineer (1) "the beta 992 GT3 feels a bit bland at normal road speeds, what can we do?" - engineer (2) "we've been through this a thousand times, we can't redesign the front end again" - engineer (3) "I know what we can do to square the circle, increase the steering rack rate that will give the appearance of more feedback at low speeds and won't affect the design, require any significant re-tooling and won't increase production costs" .
Its still a very good and highly competent car - I strongly suspect you will love your GT4 RS.

Any more driving impressions? Back roads? Track days?
About to pick my car up soon. Getting excited for more impressions.

For track rats who want to push the car, the Cup 2s are woefully inadequate. I like driving on track with streetable tires, so I stayed with street tires but switched over to Cup 2 R connects, 255/35/20 on the fronts (a wee bit more tire then OEM), and the Cup 2 Rs do provide a higher level of confidence. The R's do wear quickly, 3 days only on fronts with full stock OEM settings. Dialing in more camber will be necessary, as will finding longer lasting streetable tires.
Porsche bet the moon on this 4.0 ltr engine as it is essentially the same engine in their entire GT fleet street and motorsports. The cool thing is if you lined up every GT car Porsche makes currently (GT4RS / GT3 / GT3RS / Clubsport / Cup Car / GT3R) and did a drag race from a rolling start, all the cars would cross the finish line about the same time. Really cool to drive a Cayman and have nearly the power of a full on IMSA race car.
BK, enjoy the sound and fury in good health!

Had a chance to drive a friend's GT4RS on the road today.
The soundtrack is hard to describe, unlike any other Porsche I've ever driven. Very much like a race car, and the sound at redline is borderline scary.
I was a little surprised that there isn't much torque until you're deep into the revs. The 991.1 GT3 feels more powerful. The torque curve and transmission seem to be calibrated more for the track than the road.
The handling is of course excellent. It's an easy car to drive and the steering is telepathic.
I was surprised to find the ride quality to be quite good. I don't know why some people complain that it's too harsh. Didn't feel any harsher than my 992 TTS.
Overall, I think this is a fun car road car, and I'm sure it's a hoot on track.

My car is just one day old;
Just returned of a 50 km country side road tour, B roads. If anybody thought this car wouldn't`t be good for B road driving, well I have some bad news for you; this car can do it brilliantly. I is utterly composed, road compliance bar none, in 'D" the revs are kept fairly low, the sound is nice, you can listen to your favorite radiostation, or MP3 player, or your telephone, what ever you like.
But if you tap on the gas, or shift back some gears, well; the monster awakens :-) A kind of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde behavior so to speak.
If the beast is unleashed, this is a car on steroids, on adrenaline; a car on edge if you want it to be !!
The car is very direct; steering input, braking input, shifts, revs, I don't think its lacking torque, but he car hides its speed very well.
It is both capabel of touring and do some circuit days, just magnificent imho.

Finally picked up the car from the ppf shop. Very stoked. Some observations from my very slow drive in the hills: (it’s raining on cinco de mayo for some weird reason in CA)
I will be following the Andreas break in method:311mi - <4k rpm
435mi - <5k rpm
559mi - <6k rpm
684mi - <7k rpm
808mi - <8k rpm
932mi - <9k rpm (1500km)
I can tell it will be bonkers when I can finally cut loose. Looking forward to it.
I couldn’t be happier. Can’t wait for some track time.
- The car rides fine. I think it likely is a little more harsh than a normal GT4. I think it can be somewhat attributed to the F 30 psi and R 34 psi recommendation.
- The noise (under 4k only so far) is just playable like an instrument with your right foot. Cruising speeds sounds better than the 718 GT4. No annoying drone at 3k rpm. The engine actually sounds more like the 981 musically at low revs imo. I counted probably 3 stages of noises / flaps (i think) or something in the intake as I dug into the throttle
- In low RPMs going from ~5% throttle to 50% somewhat quickly causes a bass sound in the intake that rattles / buzzes for a moment - (other owners: is this normal?)
- The car is just the right size. I forgot. Going from the 991.2 GT3 to this just confirms I’m a cayman person. Although I would have both if I had the space and was single.
- The rear wheel steer of the 911 GT3 is amazing but it feels kinda odd. I prefer the more natural feel of the cayman. It still turns in very well.
