I really like the cutaway drawings Porsche makes for some of their products. For the 982 platform they made images for the Cayman S, Boxster S, GT4 and Spyder variants. I was hoping they would make some for the GTS 4.0 cars but they did not. I noticed they used the same camera for all of the 982 variants so I superimposed them in Photoshop and went to work. I started with the Cayman S and added the engine, manual transmission, exhaust, shifter, taillights, and Race-Tex material from the GT cars. I added the wheels from the Boxster S since they more closely resembled the GTS wheels vs the others that were available. I played with the body color some as well and below are the results. I really like some of the PTS Greens that Porsche has although I'm not sure which this more closely matches (perhaps Lizard Green). I made one in Racing Yellow after seeing images of UncleDudes car as he waited patiently for resolution. I'm still fiddling and refining but thought I would share what I have for now.
I've been providing pictures, measurements, and feedback to @Randy_B for the last several weeks. Then last week we agreed that he had perfected my exact car (a Cayman GTS 4.0), so I paid him $50 via PayPal and he provided a high-res cutaway view of my EXACT car. This included the following details:
GT Silver exterior
RaceTex interior with leather dash and doors
PDK Transmission
Satin Platinum Wheels (lots and lots of time spent here, which is crazy because you can barely see the wheels)
Brushed Aluminum interior trim (yes, Randy was able to capture this detail)
Clear corner lights
So here's the final version of my car, along with two views of the engine (all of these are the low-res versions; if you want the full-res versions, hit up Randy for his services):
What I did with these was to get large poster-size printouts that I originally intended to hang in my garage, but since they turned out so good I'm thinking of hanging them in my office instead. FedEx can take your images and make them into a photo poster, where they print the image and fasten it to a hard backboard (so you don't need a giant picture frame). Here is the link to this option on the FedEx website. I went with the slightly higher-cost satin finish instead of the gloss finish. The price includes mounting to a sturdy 3/4" black edged rigid board. The minimum life indoors is 5 years; most other printing services I looked at only guaranteed a 1-year life. I went with 20” x 24” for the engine pictures ($70/ea before coupon), and 24” x 36” for the cutaway image of the car ($110 before coupon). (FedEx coupons: Enter NOW722 for $10 off $50, NOW822 for $20 off $100, or NOW922 for $30 off $150. Ends 12/31/2021.) So my FedEx total ended up being $233. And this is what I got:
Kudos and a big THANK YOU to @Randy_B for offering this service and spending dozens of hours perfecting every detail. I know I'm obsessive, and in Randy I think I may have found someone even more obsessive than myself! Chef's Kiss to the results!
Thanks for the nice comments and interest as this will be an ongoing project. I will continue to refine the layers for a better end result and plan to do the same for the Boxster GTS. I also plan to break up the GT4 and Spyder images into layers that can then be colorized to hopefully match the full range.
I'm 3D modeling the front and rear factory GTS wheels and will match the camera in the image when I'm finished so they will pop right into place when rendered. It will take some time to match everything up including the lighting to where it looks seamless. Once I have everything needed for all four 982 types to a level that I'm satisfied with I can entertain some customized requests.
I'm also working on a one-piece rear license plate bracket for the US and Canada market cars. I'm pretty satisfied with what I have so far in terms of design and I'm looking into having it made in case I end up with one of these cars. I'm OCD full stop and the way the plates attach to these cars is a little surprising. I may try to bring it to market if it turns out well and is workable for a price that folks would want to pay.
Yes, it's a white one and is available on their website in the press section. It's available in a larger size than even this one which I had to match to the size of the others. Here it is below:
It will take me a little while to match their quality since they have the actual models and can render into separate layers from the beginning. I don't have that luxury short of recreating the models myself which would take a great deal of time. This is mainly a Photoshop exercise for me at this point and I wanted some subject matter that interested me and you can't do much better than these cars for that!
