I think "we" collectively started referring to the model as an "RS" - I personally doubt PAG would name it such...

I think he was confusing comments from you (Larry) and Bob.

"He (VP Frank-Steffen Walliser) went on to mention that if green-lighted, a 718 Boxster Spyder RS would not be a track-focused car since it has a folding roof."

But yeah, they could change the name. Or not. I wouldn't care, just need one in my drive way!!!!!! I might even take the &*^% PDK.

The positioning comment/statement is key. Yes they can build it but where will it be positioned in the Porsche hierarchy. 991.2 Speedster started at 275k. Same engine. Similar top and open air experience with large engine. Hard to imagine they would knock off 125k for a starting price, Speedster vs Spyder. But who knows. Comparison of GT4RS at 141k which is about 10k less than the 991.2 GT3 or 20k less than 992 GT3. 125k spread vs 20k spread? Either way, will seem like either a tremendous value vs Speedster; or if they price high, will be a bad value vs GT4RS.

You are all aware that these articles state "If green lighted" for production. That comment and the lack of test mules put this theory of a hard core Spyder well into 2023-24.
You can't just add water and do a new model, it doesn't work like that.

Larry, its all good, I know what the Evo article said, and that is fine... but that doesn't mean that it can't be done, forget about the economics, this is a 'speculation thread'!

If multiple companies can replace the main shaft and gears in the current 6MT then it is possible for Getrag to as well. These halo cars have all sorts of specialty bits in them, anything is possible.

@Westcoast Save me, brother. I am falling into the abyss of "MT is so unlikely that I am starting to accept the idea of owning a PDK just to get that engine!" Noooooooooooooooo

(Yeah, I know. I won't ever even have the option, but hey...)

We have to keep the faith!

I refuse to give in to any notion that says the MT won't be there, AP and his team will make it happen...

“When asked about the possibility of a GT4 RS version of the Porsche Boxster Spyder, Andreas Preuninger, Porsche director of GT cars, told Drive: “I could image something like that. I think it’s manageable and feasible and interesting, but it’s not confirmed.”
View 4 images“The vice president of Porsche 911 and 718 (Boxster and Cayman) model lines, Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, told Drive: “Technically speaking, this is possible (to build a Porsche Boxster Spyder GT4 RS). If we do it, I don’t know. The question is where to position it.

“As an open-top, it’s not a track-orientated car, so it must be something different. As always, we have a lot of ideas on the table and we have to make decisions.

“If you consider it as a wonderful extension of the RS idea to the Boxster platform … would I love to see such a car? Yes.”

My take away is that they are beyond just the thinking part….

I think the absurd cost of the speedster really puts them in an awkward position, vis a vis a spyder rs, as described above; the counter-point price of the 4RS really puts them in a bind as to where to price it.

Would that prevent them from building it at all?

Or buy one and send it to John at BGB....he once did a manual 991.1 GT3RS conversion that works just like OEM.

IIRC that GT3RS thought it was a 911R for purposes of engine and gearbox communicating properly. There isn't an obvious parallel of manual mid-engine for a conversion of PDK GT4RS / Spyder RS to manual, however. Where there's a will there's a way, but the way could be much more complicated than for that GT3RS.

Agreed.....BGB did most of the electronics (hardware/software), even designing new wire harnesses.....pretty sure this project got very expensive but it worked.
Maybe some of the stuff from a regular manual 718 with a 4.0L can be re-used.

This would be beyond what I would do to have a MT, at that point I would likely just keep my current Spyder... from Porsche and the 718 MT now in there, stronger gears and main shaft should do it.
