Oil Consumption Discussion
Hi,
I got a 'top up oil light' on my GT4 yesterday.
What oil would you recommend putting in it. I know some people don't always agree with what Porsche dealerships give you, so would like a second opinion.
I've picked up Castrol 0W-40 from them today. Any disagreements on this oil?

Plenty. Expect no less than 6 million differing opinions to be posted here soon. What came in it from the factory? Likely Mobil 1 0-40w. While it's under warranty my advice is to put in whatever the factory did so that card can't be played in a warranty claim later if needed.

Castrol, Mobil 1, Liqui-Moly, Motul, etc. etc. etc....
Full synthetic, correct viscosity rating, not Walmart brand (which is actually probably OK too).
Of course everyone's going to disagree - and have tons of anecdotal evidence.
If its what the Porsche dealership had and recommends, you're more than fine.
Edit: Went down a rabbit hole on the Porsche C40 spec. It looks like it's so new that it's actually hard to get C40 approved oil on the retail side currently. I'm 99% sure you're going to be fine (especially with US models with inert GPF) with A40 approved oils like 8100 X-cess, and the standard Mobil 1 synthetic.

Yep. As long as the oil meets the manufacturers requirements brand name is largely irrelevant. Also go slow on the pour when topping it off. Too much in becomes a different kind of pain is the rear.

Just topped mine up after 5000kms its got Mobil 1 0-40w in it from the factory. BTW after topping up it still may say it needs a top up. If so you need to shut it off and lock it. Wait a minute or 2 then start it to reset it.

Oil consumption
I just hit 3000kms and I've noticed that my oil level is just below half. I had a pretty standard break in by gradually increasing the revs once I was over 500km. Did a couple of redline shifts when I hit 1500km and on but haven't tracked or driven aggressively for extended periods.
I'm not concerned at all, more just wondering what others are experiencing.
TIA,
P.

pretty typical for Porsche engines to consume more oil during break-in ... once the "O" rings on the pistons are bedded in consumption should be better (certainly this was the case with Mezger 6 cyls)

Burned 1/3 quart during a by the book break-in to 2000 miles. Topped off to full. Then Did a track day at 2300 and now on 3000 miles...Still indicates full.

Put 5500 km on and had to add 1 litre. I followed break in protocol and do not drive super aggressive. No track days but did take close to red line a few times.
