Gear 1-2 grind

Not one regret whatsoever, I have no interest in any other transmission in this car, it is what makes this car so special to me, manual control of the gear selection and the engines connection to it through the clutch a spectacular combination to enjoy in a superb chassis!
To put the 1-2 grind into perspective, for me it is a less than 1% issue... a split second delay is all that is required to mitigate its intrusion, now making it 0%.
The discussion here for me is one of curiousity and discovery.

Yes, I have experienced the 1-2 shift grind at least 5 times since new and each time the car was warm. 25 years of manual driving and never seen this...I admit once the engine is warm I shift fast and I will continue shifting fast otherwise what is the point for a “GT” manual Porsche.
I will date myself a bit here and say that I learned stick on a VW Bettle, honed my skills with "3 on the tree" and during that process learned how to power shift, double clutch and yes even rebuild more non-synco 3-speeds then I will admit to, eventually adapting a 4-speed transmission to the bell housing that turned out to be the answer to ripping the teeth off of first gear!
With the Spyder I hope to keep on shifting for years to come, knowing more about the cause in my view is key to minimizing the potential for problems.

Ah @Westcoast the memories of a “3 on the tree”. Mine was a 68 Ford LTD. Did the conversation to move from the column to the floor. Talk about a LONG 2nd.

Would be nice to hear from someone with little higher mileage (like 10k+ miles) if the issue went away.
I am still taken aback by the purported synchro issue.
Interesting thread on the issue in 981: https://rennlist.com/forums/gt4/9420...-update-2.html

Given that most cars delivered so far are manual surprised not more reporting same?
Shift linkage alignment issues? Other owners driving in such a way to avoid without knowing it?
Sad that such a great car/transmission one must adjust driving style to accommodate.

Did anyone hear of comparable issues with 991.2 GT3 manual gear box?
If it’s flawless, I am thinking we might be able to use its 1-2 synchro. I am no mechanic so could be completely wrong.

I am really curious how this develops. I'd like to keep the GTS 4.0 for a long time. And in that respect a manual gearbox is a better bet. There is pretty much no repairing of PDK, replacement only, and that's mega bucks.

that’s what I am hoping for. Until then I will drive it like I stole it (once the engine and tires are warm of course)

My Spyder is 4500km, I don’t track it but I drive it hard. Over the last 200km, most of the time the gears are butter smooth even 1-> 2 at 7000rpms.
However, I’ve had 3 instances in which getting into 2 was impossible!!! 2 instances heavy breaking in 3rd at 5000rpms and downshifting to 2 and 1 instance up shifting from 1 to 2 at ~5000rpms.
I just put in Neutral and go back to 3rd then 2nd gear and it works fine.
I will inform my dealership and give it another 2000km, if it happens again more than 3 times, I will start with a gearbox oil change and see how it improves.

I have never ever had a problem 3->2 no matter how hard I was on the car … well unless I ****ed up the rev match myself.

so not everyone may have the same problem. This thread is primarily about the 1->2 change. What most folks report has been weird about that is you aren’t blocked at the gate. It grinds leaving 1st before neutral. The 2->1 shift you can be blocked at the 1st gate after leaving 2. I’ve found the 1 gate to be finicky under hard driving. A double clutch solves the 2->1 issue. 1st is a real driving gear in this car.

The issue occurs before neutral and before the 2nd gate. It’s like 1st doesn’t want to disengage completely despite the clutch being fully depressed. If you slow the shift down a half second it won’t happen. Some folks had speculated there might be a clutch bias valve. Others an alignment, or pulling the shifter too far horizontally. I wasn’t really ever able to test that satisfactorily.
