I cornered several PCNA brass at the 992 intro trying to extract any info I could on the 982 Spyder and they were all, as you would expect, tight-lipped. Genuinely nice folks who you can tell eat, sleep and drink Porsche. To a man, each told me I should hang on to the 981. Can't tell you how many times I've seen the eyes of Porsche workers, in whatever capacity, light up when I mention owning a 981 Spyder. This car is highly regarded internally at Porsche, there is no doubt about it. I'm sure the same will hold true for the 982.

Not 100% sure about that. The 987.2 Spyder and Cayman R were not launched together, The 981 GT4 and Spyder were not either.
Depends on how they will market them. Performance wise the gap between the two will close, the question is how much. We might see a repeat of the 981... Geneva for GT4 and NYC Spyder?
They do however have a ton of models they need to launch for 2019... (991.2 Speedster, Taycan @ Frankfurt, GT4 @ Geneva, Spyder, Cayenne GTS, Macan S @ Shanghai?, Macan Turbo @ Shanghai? are ones that come to mind).
So they might debut jointly like the 982 GTS??? Time will tell.

Recall that the 981 Spyder intro (April-New York), falling as closely as it did on the heels of the GT4 intro (March-Geneva), resulted in the Spyder going virtually unnoticed as the tsunami of attention and favorable press following the GT4 intro left the Spyder totally overshadowed/eclipsed. Since then, I've been of the opinion that Porsche would do things differently the next time around with the 982-gen cars to avoid a repeat occurrence, either by spacing the intro of the two cars out further or perhaps introducing both cars concurrently. If the next Spyder is a GT car, I think it's likely that both will be introduced at the same show as essentially hard-top and soft-top variants of the same car.

I guess 'Geneva' for debut & 'Lizard Green' as 'Special Color' option...
I am thinking 'Geneva' will be the show that PAG picks for the next Boxster Spyder debut this time around.
I am also very happy today with the news that the new 992 will include the color 'Lizard Green' as an optional
'Special Color'. I am confident that PAG will also allow 'Lizard Green' as an option on the new Boxster Spyder.
In fact, I am thrilled at that possibility! Here is what I posted on the other color threads on this topic today:

You might recall that I talked about this possibility earlier this year when the color was introduced with the .2 991 gt3 RS....

I must tell you all that this is, personally, one of the best news I have seen coming from PAG regarding the
color palette of their cars. Porsche is finally giving us a stunning 'solid/uni' bright green color at a relatively
affordable price ($3270) vs the now very expensive PTS option. And without the drama, delays & frustrations
associated with PTS! I trust that 'Lizard Green' will also be a 'Special Color' on the coming 2020 Boxster Spyder
...and that will most likely be the color I will choose on that model on my allocation. And I predict this will be a
much more popular color option for customers than 'Miami Blue' and 'Lava Orange' in the long run. Simply
because, unlike those two other colors that were 'massaged' rather unsuccessfully by the color fashionistas
at PAG, 'Lizard Green' is almost a faithful reproduction of the very popular formulation of the vintage 911 color
'Gelbgrün/Lime Green'!

A Spyder dressed up in Lizard Green would be stunning in appearance!! Add some special stitching to go along with it.... Car with looks and real pizzazz.

Spyder Sales > GT4 sales ??
If I recall correctly, 981 GT4 sales outnumbered Spyder sales by roughly 3 to 1. GT4's sold like hotcakes, often at a premium, while Spyders sometimes languished on dealer lots, some sold at a discount.
Question: Might we see a reversal this time around with 982 Spyder sales outpacing those of its hardtop sibling?
It will be interesting to see. The Spyder is no longer the unknown/unheralded entity it was when last introduced almost four year ago, having since achieved deserved notoriety as a canyon carver par excellence. The cat is thus out of the bag this time around and the secret is no more. Among those in the know, the Spyder is no longer viewed as merely a "GT4 lite." The car has stepped out from the long shadows cast by the GT4 and established itself in its own right. This should bode well for 982 Spyder sales IMO.

I think Spyder sales will be greater than the GT4 this go, but not for the reasons you state. At the time of the 981 GT4 debut, there was zero GT cars with manual transmissions. The return of manual created demand from many that never even considered a 981 prior. Now though there are many other options... Also curious what kind of affect the 991.2 Speedster will have on the Spyder (if any) more will be made than the 997 Speedster. Reality is know one knows as there are so many variables now... including the 992... and what does that do? Mainstream loves it, enthusiasts don’t.

Porsche stated it will make 1948 911 Speedsters in 2019.
I would expect 718 Spyder sales to be be similar to the 981 and 987.2 Spyder. The overall market for convertibles has been dropping since the peak in 2008 or so.

Agree with il pirata that the Spyder's volume would likely remain more or less the same. However, if the production lasts longer than previous gens, as some seem to think, then the overall volume would likely go up. At the same time, the Spyder market is small, not withstanding it's credentials. Not many have the tolerance for manual top and MT-only. If the rumored PDK, during the later part of the production, comes to fruition, could help some. Local dealer has an Agate Grey Spyder sitting on the showroom for the past three months! So, yeah, the market isn't all that big!
Historically, a coupe outsells an open top. Though 982 Spyder likely to be a GT, the demand for GT4 will continue to be higher. The Spyder will continue to be street-focused. As for the Speedster's impact, not at all. Completely different market. A Speedster buyer can easily pickup a Spyder; not vice versa. As I can see, there is no alternative to Spyder! It occupies a very unique space. It truly stands up to Porsche's mantra: There is no substitute!
