982 GT4 Spyder?
#1606
You're "seeing" things, Nick!! The tape's length doesn't seem to match "GT4 Spyder"; probably just "Spyder". Also, one of the protos had the front wing stamped "Spyder", as was the GT4 (with "GT4"). Subsequently, they were taped out. I don't think they will call it "GT4 Spyder"; rather, just "Spyder". Suits just fine. Imminent launch is super exciting! Long time coming!

It'll say Boxster Spyder or just Spyder. If Porsche puts 718 on it then they are just stupid as the whole idea of the 718 marketing revolved around tying the 982 to a 4 cylinder past. Hopefully Porsche avoided that blunder. As much as I loved my 2016 Spyder, I'm having a hard time thinking of the 2020 Spyder as anything new. Same with the GT4. Both the 981s had flaws to fix for sure, but a 4 year gap and essentially the same aesthetic and driving experience makes little sense. A 981 Spyder/GT4 and a $2000 FVD ecu upgrade gives you the same power. And a Spyder with a much stiffer GT4 suspension would suck the fun out of it. Having owned both, the Spyder is the more enjoyable drive and really the better looking car too. Driving a GT4 around is more akin to riding performance motorcycles. You go out for a short bit and have some fun, then park it.

That's a '7.' A 'G' doesn't have a stroke going down and to the left, which is clearly visible under the tape. I would sooner believe it's a '9' than a 'G'.
At the end of the day it doesn't matter what's behind the tape. What matters is what's behind the bumper.
My official prediction is that this car is just another wheezing four-banger with a de-engineered roof. Now, I can be happily proven wrong, or smugly proven right.

Glad to help, Nick!!
You're over-simplifying, I'm afraid! It is widely believed to be a GT. That's a massive difference to begin with! (will be a serious blow, to me anyway, if it isn't a GT) You're probably under-estimating Porsche's ability to fine-tune each model for the specific application. If the Spyder shares all or most of the hardware with GT4, the chassis and dynamics-tuning will be street-focused. The Spyder isn't gonna compete against its twin (evil) brother for the lap times. If you liked 981 (or 987 for that matter), you'll be blown away by 982. Well, that's my forecast anyway.

With rumors of perhaps a reveal announcement as early as next week, I think the time has now come for all of us who have followed this thread (for what seems like an eternity!) to make our highly educated predictions known, lay our cards on the table, and officially state on the record exactly how we see this new Spyder shaking out.
We've all dissected line-by-line, word-by-word, Eduardo's excellent reporting of AP's comments at Rennsport about the prospects of GT breathing on the new Spyder.
We've put headphones on and replayed over and over again YouTube Nurburgring mule postings trying to divine what lurks in that engine bay.
We've enlarged Insta spy photos steadily supplied to us by Donavan, looking for the smallest of clues.
We've listened to Henry's cold, calculated logic to the point where we find it impossible to disagree with any of his prognostications.
We've read countless re-cycled on-line opinions of automotive journalists regurgitating exactly what every other journo has said, but in a slightly different way so as to come across as "original" content.
Countless hours of time, which should have been devoted to work, have instead been diverted trying to read the tea leaves and decipher the smoke signals emanating from Zuffenhausen.
So now the time has come. Let's go. Step up.
My infallible opinion :
- Engine type: 4.0 NA
- HP: 420
- Base MSRP: $113,995 USD
- Lighter or heavier than 981 Spyder?: Lighter (thanks to weight-savings lessons learned from the development of the Bergspyder!)
- GT car?: Yes
- Official Name: 718 Boxster Spyder
What say you?

4.0 NA, GT tweaks, 109K base
If so I need to make garage space.
2019 Targa 4S PDK
2018 GT3 Touring
2018 991.2 GTS Cab manual
One may have to go, I have no idea which one though.
True first world problem.

420 PS from a new 4.0 detuned GT3 engine (not an upgraded x51 3.8 bored to 4.0) capable of 8400RPM redline , manual, named GT4 Spyder, base price USD108 grand's , with some speedster alike features such us a separate auto blip button, same PASM suspension than GT4 (gone X71), only difference with GT4 would be the ECU tune, with Spyder reaching out max power @7000rpm rather on top of the redline like GT4. Naught to 60 in 4.0 secs , same weight as 981 but worst sound (gone are the old pops and cracks of the 981)

Also, there will be cake, and free pony rides at the dealership.

Agree with most of these, Nick. The price, I estimate, might be 95 - 98k. I don't expect it to get detuned GT3 mill. So, about 15k over GTS would be a reasonable price; will be in alignment with typical pricing model Porsche follows. Will be close to C2 Cab; but, not exceed. And, will be considered a "bargain", yet again, in Porsche World. As for the name, will be just "Spyder"! I'll be happy with it!

I will play the guessing game:
-GT4 Spyder
-NA 4.0 GT3 motor detuned to 420hp
-Same roof and rear hatch/humps as 981 Spyder
-Won’t be lighter due to the GT4 bits (suspension, wheels and brakes), the 4.0 and the carryover roof and hatches.
-Price near $100k
Funny thing... I remember talking to a friend over a year ago. Someone in the industry, within the VAG family... and they called the GT4, the GT4 Coupe... now I know why!
They have done some extensive track testing with this Spyder compared to any other previous generation Spyder.
