Boxster 718 Revealed

Three Wheelin'
OK, I think I have cracked the code: Those who own a Boxster, whichever model, have decided the 718 is the Anti-Christ and/or ugly as sin. This will remain the prevailing opinion on this board and elsewhere until both new models outrun the absolute bejesus out of the 981, in which case the 718 will be regarded as the Second Coming and a roaring good deal as Porsches go.

Here's my take. There's no question the new 718 will be a quicker car than the current 981. I don't hate the design tweaks, I just think they add nothing to the overall look of the car. The treatment of the rear was really not done well, IMO. I'm an older guy who has been around Porsche and other German cars for more years than I care to admit. I consider myself a "purist." But, we're not really the audience Porsche is aiming at with these cars. Buyers are younger, fairly affluent, and couldn't give a rats *** whether their Porsche has a four or six cylinder engine. No criticism intended, buyers just want it to be a PORSCHE (the new 718 certainly says that), to be high quality, and to be fast. And status-y for some. For those of us who know and appreciate the history of these cars, the transition to smaller, faster engines is sad, but it is the future - and not only for Porsche. I'm sure these cars will sell. I don't want to come off as a snob, but if I were still in the market, I just wouldn't buy one. I would be looking for a Spyder, GT4 or even revisiting an F-type. A sports car with six, eight, ten, or twelve cylinders is just a non-negotiable for me. Thankfully, my search is done and I love and am grateful I was able to get a 981S.

It was interesting to read of the "intermediate" gears in the PDK, obtained by slipping both clutches.
“This function is achieved by partially engaging two adjacent gears simultaneously while slipping both clutches slightly to achieve an effective gear ratio in-between them.”
My questions would focus on the life of the clutches, and I would also assume that the clutch oil change interval will be shortened

Makes me wonder where 718 GTS and GT4/Spyder models will fall. With the S already at 350hp, pumping up the 2.5L a little for a GTS will put it in the same range as the 370hp 3L in the 911 which would be weird from a positioning perspective. A 400+hp turbo 4 for the GT4/Spyder would be even more of a stretch, they say the turbo 6 won't fit, so presumably that will need to stay NA with a powerkit 3.8?

If I had time and money I would buy the latest generation VW beetle then stick the boxster s engine in the back where it belongs.

Well, is there any word on production of 2017 718 Spyder? I haven't heard anything about it yet. Perhaps there may be a 2-3 year hiatus after 981 Spyder production closes in April. The GT4 production will continue, I suppose. So the question will be 'What do they do with the GT4 engine for 2017?'.

That is really unfortunate.
The rear end is just tacky. I think it needs some more chrome lettering stuck on there. Maybe “Brougham” under the left tailight and “Limited” under the right one?
The car looks taller somehow. Either they lowered the bumper height, or they pulled up the lower end of the headlight and taillight lenses. It’s going to look even less graceful with US-width license plates...
After recovering from the Panamera and Cayenne with the 991, the 981, and the Macan, I was really confident Porsche design had gotten their act together. I guess not ...

I can't believe Porsche went from a six cylinder to a turbo four and added 5 grand to the MSRP!
This brand is amazing with its pricing structure.
Everytime I hear of boxster s at 92 grand I cringe.
German engineering and design is excellent but the pricing is whacked.
I'll wave at you guys as I see you on the road...
Btw the jaguar f type was a dud compared to the boxster s.
I drove both the same day and there is no comparison..
The boxster s with PDK and sport chrono is a sports car while the f type was a luxury sedan wrapped in a gorgeous body..
Corvette z51 and z06 offer super car levels of performance ..

Agree, I think the front looks a little less sporty, but I'm digging the rear, especially from the 3/4 angle. The rear wheel arches and transition into the rear decklid looks more muscular and sporty.
I think they did a much better job on this car than they did on the restyle of the 991.2.

Now I feel like WTF, the new boxster s is faster than a 981 spyder? Seriously? and the spyder is the low weight model?

Maybe the new Cayman will bring back the landau roof to complete the transition.

One man's meat is another man's poison....I like it. Bringing in elements of the Mission-E.
And I listened to the exhaust recording on the website. Sounds tough. Again, I like it.
A Cayman S with PDK has the potential to be a sub 4.0 sec car
