Porsche to End ICE-Powered 718 Production Next Year?

The 718 isn’t only going away because of ice. There are safety and other regulations it can’t meet in the EU. It wouldn’t shock me if we someday see a hybrid, but it can’t be a 718. It’d need to be a new project. And at the caymans current sales numbers, that’s a tough thing to justify. As drifting notes, the 983 is a Bev platform, and the cayman only gets one.

Is that what it is: Old tech? But which old tech exactly? I was wondering why the heck a cybersecurity law killed the Cayman/Boxster/Macan. Read about it, but there was nothing specific. Like you said, it should have been something relatively easy to fix, but apparently not. So curious what exactly is the issue (or issues). Hopefully you know. Thanks.

PAG briefed at RR7 implementing the new EU protocols cost almost as much as developing a new platform.
Combine that with EU zero emissions intermediate mandated targets they had to let the 718 go.
Have to carve out as much space to maintain 911 ICE as long as possible.
GT3 longer yet because EU carbon capture biofuel carve out PAG got.

So there’s no entry level sports car anymore.

Yeah, there is, but WAY more expensive. Ha ha. I honestly don't consider non-GT 911s a sports car anymore; maybe a sport coupe. It feels BIG now, at least compared to a Cayman, which is (and soon to be 'was') a true sports car. And even though it's very capable, the driving dynamics are not nearly as satisfying, with all of that weight at the rear; you feel every bit of that. And no 6MT anymore. But I know almost everybody else does, including Porsche, so the base one will be the 'entry level' now, although starting at 6 figures, it's hardly affordable indeed. And even with minimally acceptable options, they ring out at $120K+. And that's without any ADM. They're just not worth it to me (not even close). I balked at the $91K for the fully loaded 2.0T SE 6MT I ordered, but at least I'll get a great driving experience.

I spent way too long configuring a 4.0 GTS last night. Bucket seats, full leather with race tex, mmm and still costs less than a Base 911. I am looking forward to the 718 EV though, and believe it will make for an epic car. With onsite track charging becoming more popular, it would be a hoot there as well. It's poised to be one of the lightest EVs to come to market and I'm hoping will bring multi link rear suspension to the Cayman/Boxster platform due to the improved packaging.

Their esthetics from that view certainly makes them look bloated due to the battery pack.

So is the guy in the last photo taking a photo of you, using the front-facing camera?

Why is it "due to the battery pack"? Do you know how it's packaged or why that would make it look "bloated"? The battery is quite likely in the floor and will not make the car look "bloated"

Anyone noticed that Porsche increased the price on 718 by a few thousands but made some things standard (PDK, 2-zone hvac, etc.)? I built out a similar car as before and I think it’s actually a few thousands cheaper now? Perhaps they recognized that people are not as willing to pay close to $120K for a Cayman GTS (I last specced it out few months ago at $117K).

^^^^ Well the base price of the Boxster GTS is $4,500 more than the base price of my 2021 Spyder. So yes, thing are up!

Whether the battery is partially in the floor or behind the seats, the car looks bloated compared to the present design. Definitely chunkier.
