718 GT4
#31
I love my Cayman even more than I love my 911 and would really like to see the platform reach its full potential. However, I am not naive to the 911 effect.
See the following and chime in if you like: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1076...r-porsche.html
I offer the following two as 718 GT4 proposals:
1. 4 cylinder version of the GT3 motor, roughly 2.7 liters
2. smaller displacement version of GT3 motor with 9k max RPM
Neither would bring parity for the Cayman platform, but would still make for a hell of a car.
CJ, it would be good to get your perspective.

I just read thru the entire thread, interesting. I am new to Porsche so I think I am free of many biases. I love my 718 Cayman GTS, such a capable car and look forward to taking it on the track. I never really considered the 911 since I was looking to stay under $90 K and pay cash. From an aesthetics point of view, I like the modern lines of the Cayman, though I also appreciate the classic lines of the 911. If and when I ever trade in the 718, I would also consider a 911, I have never driven one. Also, lots of the same old comments regarding the sound of the 718, which I understand. The flat 6 sounds great. The flat 4 sounds fine, probably cause I am new to the Porsche world. I’ve always owned 4 cyl cars, many of which were / are turbocharged.

A turbo 4 GT4 will help the .1 version IMO. A 3.8 NA like the previous powerkit (although I bet still nerfed somewhat, as 430 is just a bit too high across the lineup) would drag the .1 version down a quarter notch but not bad.
A 3.8 or especially a 4.0 9000 rpm engine will punish the .1 pretty hard, assuming the pricing is anywhere near the cost per HP guidelines. If it's a 130+K Cayman with ADM and flipper punks all over them from day one, then the .1 might, even in that case, remain on very solid ground.

I think it's already been confirmed that the 718 GT4 will have a 3.8L from the Carrera S, enlarged to 4.0L, making something like 420hp.
It will not have a retuned GT3 engine.
But will be NA.

It would be an amazing car and will sell very well. Even the Spyder would do well now that NA's are so hard to get.

Maybe at the beginning of 718 GT4 availability, but after 2019 there will be a period of years without a new GT car release (GT3 is typically the first and comes in the 3rd year of the next generation). This intervening period usually supports GT car values.

what's going on with the top part of the spoiler support struts... the parts that extend over the top of the spoiler? Not really sure of terminology here, but it seems strange, wouldn't a smaller support entirely under the wing be lighter and create less drag?

They are called swan neck wing supports and they actually create less drag and increase downforce. The airflow over the bottom of the wing is what creates downforce and keeping the surface clean increases the efficiency of the wing. This design will likely only be seen on the clubsport version of the GT4 for racing customers. The street version will most likely retain normal bottom mount supports for aesthetic and cost reasons.
