Default Suspension HR Springs Question

After picking up my car back in September of 07 I have been looking into mods. I am thinking of lowering the car with the HR sport springs. I looked back at my maintenance records and the struts were changed less than 30k miles ago, but with standard OEM. Is there any sense in changing the springs and using the existing struts? They look practically brand new, not to mention that saves me about 1000 bucks.

The existing dampers are not stiff enough for the sport springs.

What I have heard is consistent with what Geoffrey says. You will get the car lower by moving to the sport springs with the stock dampers, but I have been told the ride will be bouncy as the stock dampers are not stiff enough. I have not tried it, however. Anyone here tried sport springs with stock dampers?

I went H&R red springs but also installed Bilstein HDs all around at the same time, and am very happy with the results. Nice and low, and ride comfort is firm but tolerable. In your case you may want to look into Euro M030 springs which I believe are lower and firmer than stock springs but should work with your new stock struts.

I had standard shocks on my 965 but only 17k miles on them with HR springs, was low and drove perfectly, geo was set up by 'G-force' in Uk though

I installed the H&R Red with my M030 dampers (same as on a 965) and it was Ok, but noticably underdampened. I've since switched out to Blistein sports. Standard dampers would most certainly be unacceptable

My last 911 I put the H&R greens on with stock shocks and it drove perfectly city and highway. As far as track I would have no clue.

If you do the work yourself you could give it a try with stock dampers and if you didn't like the ride you could switch to Bilstiens. Doing it twice can get expensive, however, if you are paying someone to wrench on your car.

Thanks for the feedback so far...I guess I should have added what I plan to do with the car. I do plan on some occasional auto crosses and a track day or two, but mostly it will be used for street.

I also plan on doing the work myself (or at least trying it....I need to read a bit). I am wondering if stock dampers and sport springs, while not ideal, may be an improvement over my 131k standard springs.

At 131K your shocks are shot. I'm planning to replace my shocks in the near future as well. Not a big deal, done it before. You will need a spring compressor. There are some excellent how-to's on Rennlist so with little wrenching experience you'll be able to do it without a hitch.

If you do it yourself how do you set the corner weights and set up the geo?

Do you have any idea how much they lower the car?

Give it a go on doing it yourself. You said your shocks only have 30k on them, right? That's good news. I think mine were original (150K+ miles) and the top nuts on the fronts were crazy tight. I ended up cutting the springs off and then cutting the strut to get the mounts off. Of course I never had intent of reusing my struts so no loss. My advice is to first make sure you can break the top nuts loose. Read the DIY and howto help. I was able to break a couple of 7mm alen head sockets on mine before I gave up. If you can break those loose OK then you should be able to do it all yourself and salvage the struts.

When you do decide to dive in drop me a PM and I'd be happy to talk to you about my experience since I did this rather recently.

Good luck!
