Porsche Mission E

Scheduled to go on sale late next year, Porsche’s Mission E will usher in an entirely new era for the legendary automaker.

Over two years have passed since Porsche announced that it would be building the all-electric Mission E. Since then, we’ve watched as details of the forthcoming sedan have slowly trickled out. We’ve seen it testing in the wild, and we watched as Porsche shocked the world by bringing an off-road variant to the Geneva Motor Show. And now, in a rather obscure manner, Porsche has finally given us a glimpse at the actual production Mission E.

Porsche Mission E

We say obscure because Porsche didn’t release these various photos of the Mission E and its details in a normal press release. They didn’t show them in an investor meeting, nor at a big time car show. In true Easter egg fashion, they slyly slid them into their Annual & Sustainability Report, a place where few would even think to look.

Regardless, these images still don’t tell us the whole story of the production Mission E. But we can gather quite a few clues from them. For starters, it looks like the majority of the concept’s lines remain intact, which is obviously a good thing. The rear portion of the roofline does appear to be higher, presumably to improve headroom for rear seat passengers.

Porsche also confirmed some specs on the car. The performance EV will generate “over 600 hp” and do zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 3.5 seconds. Range is set at 500 kilometers (310 miles), and an 80-percent charge can be achieved in only 15 minutes. Impressive numbers, indeed. But as Porsche boss Oliver Blume notes, the Mission E is more than just another model in the automaker’s lineup. It’s an important step in their next evolution.

“The Mission E will not only redefine the high-performance e-vehicle segment, it will also give a boost to Germany as a technology producer and thus to possibilities offered by electromobility in general,” Blume said. “The vehicle will be a trailblazer for the mass appeal of e-vehicles. It will set standards and will represent motion in more than one sense. The only things that the Mission E will not offer are boredom and forbearance.”

That revolution will begin in late 2019 when the Mission E finally hits showroom floors!
