Porsche Carrera GT Owners to Wait Over a Year for Recall Repair

Porsche Carrera GT owners have been waiting on a suspension recall repair for almost a year and the fix isn’t coming until  Summer 2024 at the earliest.

Imagine yourself in a position where you can afford a car that costs north of one million dollars on average. Take into consideration all of the blood, sweat, and tears that went into putting you into that position. Now, imagine, it’s April 2023. You’re checking your mail and thinking today might be a nice day to take the ever-elusive Porsche Carrera GT for a cruise. Suddenly, you see a notification from Porsche telling you not to drive your seven-figure dream car. Why? There’s a chance it might kill you.

Jalopnik reports that the original recall affected 489 of the 1,300 Porsche Carrera GT models that Porsche built spanning the 2004 and 2005 model years. After the release of the initial recall, though, Porsche went on to expand the recall to every single Carrera GT ever built. In one fell swoop, virtually every example of this ferocious V10-powered miracle of engineering hit the sideline.

Corrosion and Mechanical Stress May Lead to Detrimental Suspension Failure

The recall outlines that the spherical joints that connect wishbone suspension components on the front and rear axles may fail. The recall states that parts Porsche expects parts for the repair to be available in the third quarter of 2023. So, despite having spent almost a year under advisory not to drive their cars, Carrera GT owners won’t likely see any salvation for another six months at least.

Porsche responded to Jalopnik’s outreach regarding the recall. Here’s what Frank Wiesmann, Porsche Cars North America Manage, Product Communications, had to say:

“We regularly monitor the quality of our products. As part of this, we recently identified there is the potential, in rare instances, that the spherical joints that connect the wishbone suspension components on the front and rear axles of the Carrera GT may be susceptible to corrosion over prolonged periods of time. Owners affected have been contacted and, are now being updated on the remedy plan. The remedial action – which will be carried out in due course – involves a component replacement which will be carried out for free at the owner’s convenience. Out of an abundance of caution, we have recommended that owners not to drive their vehicles until the replacement can be carried out. No incidents attributed to this concern have been reported,” said Wiesmann.

Upgrading as an Option

Some Carrera GT owners may opt not to wait for the repair. Perhaps the most notable Carrera GT owner at the moment, Doug DeMuro, recently put out a video announcing some modifications done to his Carrera GT. This included a full suspension upgrade. In the video, he states that it modernizes the vehicle’s handling to match that of current track-demolishing supercars. Additionally, he states that it doesn’t take away from the analog feel of the CGT.

Perhaps, then, simply upgrading the suspension is worth considering for other Carrera GT owners. Sure, it’s not a cheap upgrade. The parts alone for the KW V5 Coilover kit are over $18,000. However, if you can afford the car, it’s probably not much of a concern. On the flip side, if you’d prefer to wait for the free repair, we can appreciate that, too. Either way, we just hope Carrera GT owners actually take their cars out for a drive after this is over.
