Porsche 918 Spyder Explodes in Owner’s Garage, Is a Total Loss

Porsche 918 Spyder Explodes In Garage

It’s unclear what caused this Porsche 918 Spyder to ‘explode’ in the owner’s garage, but at least no one was hurt.

While all kinds of vehicles catch on fire on a regular basis for a number of different reasons, there are two types of vehicles that tend to get lots of press coverage when that happens – all-electric vehicles and sportscars/exotics. That’s because people tend to gravitate toward those types of stories, of course, but there’s a problem with that – it presents the false notion that owners are likely to find themselves engulfed in flames at any given moment, when that simply isn’t true. However, for one unfortunate Porsche 918 Spyder owner in Huntsville, Alabama recently, this nightmare actually did come to fruition, according to WHNT News.

The rare and ultra-valuable Porsche 918 Spyder was parked in its owner’s garage when the hybrid hypercar reportedly “exploded,” but luckily, no one was home at the time. There was a small fire that began as a result of the explosion, but according to reports, it was small in nature and actually extinguished on its own, apparently.

This was actually a pretty positive outcome given the fact that a fire could have easily consumed the owner’s entire home as well, but as one might imagine, there was significant smoke damage in the garage. As for the 918 Spyder, well, it’s apparently a total loss, though it’s entirely unclear what caused the explosion in the first place.

One could speculate that the incident was caused by the car’s hybrid system, which may very well be the case. However, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Porsche 918 Spyder burst into flames – way back in 2014, another model caught fire at a gas station in Canada after the owner overfilled the gas tank, which leaked onto its hot exhaust and ignited a fire.

Otherwise, we weren’t able to conjure up any more reports of Porsche 918 Spyder examples catching fire or exploding, so this certainly seems like an isolated incident – especially when we consider the fact that what happened in Canada can be directly attributed to operator error. Nonetheless, there are certainly a lot of unanswered questions revolving around this latest case – including, most importantly, what might have caused it in the first place.
