2006 Porsche 987 Boxster fire

Porsche owner shares his scary tale of his hot Boxster going up in flames.

We come across various interesting stories online from our fellow Porsche enthusiasts. Most tend to be cool pictures or our beloved Porsches on the road, or information on interesting modifications and restorations. And then, there’s some that break our heart.

When we saw this once-beautiful 2006 Porsche 987 Boxster reduced to ashes, we had to pour one out for our lost flat-six comrade. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the blaze. Posted online at the Porsche Subreddit by MrImSoCool, the post is entitled: “Today, I sadly left the Porsche family.”

“I was driving on the highway and looked in my rear view mirror and noticed a little bit of smoke following me,” MrImSoCool writes. “So I threw my hazards on and made my way to the right hand shoulder…watching the smoke grow. Luckily a Jeep behind me also pulled over and dialed 911. Once I got out the smoke was intensely pouring out of the air intake and from under the car when it then burst into flames! I was able to get the back trunk opened via the switch (thank God the electronics were still working) to retrieve my school bag because I have a final tomorrow morning. After grabbing my bag I put it off to the side and realized my wallet was still in the cabin, so I got closer, but by that time the interior was engulfed in flames.”

Seriously, if there is one thing we will not mess with, it is fire. Best to always err on the side of caution! Thankfully, MrImSoCool found other pedestrians came to his aid, and were willing to lend a helping hand.

“Then, waiting for the fire department, two vans from a company pulled over in front…and two men came running with fire extinguishers. The extinguishers worked to an extent and the flames subsided quite a bit but immediately shot back up. Once the fire dept. arrived they put it out fairly quick (mind you, the response time was pretty fast for being out in small town Navasota, TX) and I was walking around the car examining the aftermath.”

To add insult to injury, here is what the 987 Boxster looked like before.

Not much is left of MrImSoCool’s Porsche. But his sense of humor is intact.

“It was an oddly amazing to look at [the burned out car],” he writes. “Definitely made more room to work on the engine that’s for sure!”

As for what caused the fire, he does not yet know. It doesn’t appear to be related to the car’s construction itself, but maybe a fuel or oil leak.

As for MrImSoCool, he is hoping his insurance will have him behind the wheel of another Porsche soon. One he got a taste of the Porsche experience, he understood: there is no substitute.

“I hope I can get a chance to visit my car for one last look” he adds. “This car was the first Porsche I’ve owned and I’m hooked, no way I could settle for any other brand. I hope to get back on the road in another Porsche!

We are glad to hear he is safe, and hope he’s enjoying a new unparalleled flat six ride soon.
