One-Off Porsche 944 Pickup Is the Perfect Utilitarian Sports Car

It took a full 2,500 man hours to create this strangely cool Porsche 944 pickup, and now it’s up for sale – with a hefty price tag.

Many of us that own Porsche vehicles also have a pickup of some sort in our garages, and for good reason – we need something more utilitarian to haul things around in, whether that be bags of mulch from the local big box store or the entire family on a road trip. Unfortunately, Porsche doesn’t make a pickup of any sort, though it has found great success in the crossover/SUV market over the past several years. Thus, for brand loyalists that would prefer not to own anything else, this wild, one-of Porsche 944 pickup up for sale at 914 Boxer Garage is a pretty cool alternative.

Most would take once glance at this rather insane Porsche 944 pickup and immediately think that it took a ton of time and labor to build, and they’d be correct. In fact, work on this particular project began way back in 1995, and it wasn’t completed until 2021 – a full 26 years and 2,500 man hours later. Of course, the job wasn’t one that really needed to take that long to complete, but it’s still a testament to monumental effort that went into making a custom, one-off vehicle complaint with strict German motoring laws.

That job included lopping off the rear section of a 944 and replacing it with a rather massive 81-inch bed, which is on par with a full-size pickup. To help support that extra weight and length, 914 Boxer Garage fitted the sports car with an extra rear axle, and it’s functional to boot, with brakes to slow the rig down, a rear-mounted transaxle from an Audi 200 Turbo handling gear changes, and power coming from a 3.0-liter four-cylinder engine taken from a 968.

While it would have been easy to just slap all of these components together and call it a day, the work here is seemingly immaculate – if one didn’t know any better, you’d think you were looking at an OEM build, in fact. Porsche parts were utilized throughout, a list that includes a 944 S2 front end with 924 Carrera GT headlights, 993 911 wheels, and even a vintage 911 hue called Continental Orange adorns the exterior. It’s a truly cool but quirky ride – one that probably isn’t worth the exorbitant asking price of €175,000, or around $190k USD – but that’s for buyers to decide, we suppose.
