6 Puzzling Porsche Pickup Trucks

People balked when Porsche made and SUV but came to love the Macan and Cayenne, and Mercedes is now making a pickup truck, so why shouldn't they? Here are some we spotted from around the internet.

1. 944 Pickup

Of all the trucks in this article, the 944 probably is easiest to understand. These cars were inexpensive on the used market for a long time, and any minor accident could destroy that rear hatch glass. What better solution than to make it into a notchback truck with a small bed for hauling your track tires, or spare parts? Owners of these trucks aren't too proud of them though as there are only a few pictures online. One of these looks like a professional job, with the hatch made into a removable topper.

2. 928 Dually Pickup

Typically heavy duty trucks have dual rear wheels to spread the load out over 4 tires. The builder of this 928 based truck also has 4 wheels in back, though not on one axle but two. All this 928 needs is a 5th wheel hitch in the bed to be able to tow a trailer loaded with track day toys. You may not believe this is real, but there is video here.

3. 914 Pickup

There are famously at least two Porsche 914 pickup trucks running around that were built in the 1970s by VW/Porsche shops. When you think about it, turning the 914 into a pickup almost makes sense. These cars are light and fuel efficient, and as reliable as a hammer. At the time they were built they were likely insurance claim cars that had been rear ended and needed body work anyway. The rear bed is just the right size for the gear and tools you need for an autocross or track day, or maybe a set of tires.

4. More 928 Pickups

These seriously make no sense what so ever. Why are there so many of them out there? Do a Google search and you will find at least a half dozen Porsche 928s that have been converted into an El Camino (Das Camino?). We have to assume these were cars with a bad timing belt and a broken motor that have been bought by mechanics for cheap, right?

5. Rinspeed 996 Bedouin Concept

In 2008, Rinspeed debuted a show car based on a 996 that is truly the ultimate active lifestyle Porsche. Mounted up above the rear engine is a cargo area, with a tailgate like a pickup truck, but it also features a retractable roof to turn it into a mini wagon. Plus they gave it off-road tires and all-wheel drive, to get you to that mountain bike trail. Sadly, Porsche built the Macan when they choose to make a small SUV and not something like this.

6. Air Cooled, Rear Engined, Front Cargo, 911 Pickup

Ha ha, this was just an April Fools prank someone made years ago to illustrate how Porsche would build a truck if they choose to. Of course, since they insist on rear engine placement against the conventional wisdom, they would choose to put the cargo box in the front. Never mind how impossible it would be to drive something like this once you loaded a couple of dirt bike in the nose, or an apartment's worth of furniture. As far as we know, no one has ever attempted to build one.
