Magnus Walker Drives the First Porsche that Ignited a Lifelong Passion

By -

Famed Porsche collector looks back at his inspirations, especially the 1977 911 Turbo that started it all.

When Magnus Walker was only ten years old, he started a lifelong long affair with Porsche. It started after he attended a car show with his father and spotted a 1977 White Martini Porsche 911 Turbo. After that, everything changed.

“In the blink of an eye, I fell in love with that car,” says Walker in a new episode of 9:11 Magazine by Porsche.

“It looked fast standing still,” he says. “It was racy. It was something that I just dreamed about…the big whale tale, the wide flared hips…It just made me think about it all the time.”

Growing up in Sheffield, England, a working class neighborhood, Walker rarely saw Porsches on the road. But the fire was already started within. It was the birth of a Porsche man. Walker decided to write Porsche a letter.

“Believe it or not, I actually wrote a letter to Porsche and asked if I could be a designer for them,” Walker laughs. Porsche did reply and told Walker to contact them again when he was older.

“I had a dream and I never gave up.”

Walker now is synonymous with Porsche; as a successful designer, as well as an enthusiastic collector with an enviable collection.

In the video, Walker finally gets a change to drive that same beautiful ’77 White Martini Porsche that had such a profound effect on him, and he drives it in Sheffield, along the roads and streets he grew up on.

“To me, the greatest thing about driving a Porsche is freedom,” he says. “It covers all the senses. In a way there is a sense of chaos and of calmness all at the same time.”
