Porsche 934 Replica

A picture-perfect replica of a priceless race car. Sometimes, there is a substitute.

When it comes to classic air-cooled Porsches, the words “iconic” and “legendary” get thrown around all too often. Still, there are many Porsches worthy and deserving of those much-dulited titles.

One of them would be the Porsche 934, especially in orange Jagermeister livery. There have been few cars in the history of motorsport as fearsome and dominant as the 934 was in Group 4.

Based on the already-wide 930, the 934 widened the track as much as possible within regulation, then stripped as much weight as possible. The result was so light that the race cars utilized stock dashboards and door panels to keep weight at the required minimum. Even the electric window regulators were maintained!

While a genuine 934 is well out of reach for all but museums and the wealthiest enthusiasts, its street car DNA makes them ripe for replica building. Such is the case with this 1986 Porsche 930 that will be offered for sale at Mecum Auction’s Monterey 2018 sale, which runs from August 23rd through August 25th.

Looking every bit the part of an original 934, this example features its original 3.3 liter Turbo engine, with just under 40,000 miles on the rebuild. Few details are given about the engine, but the massive intercooler hints at additional power lurking within.

Correct wheels, bodywork, and graphics make the illusion complete. In fact, the modern safety gear is one of the few noticeable diversions from the real 934 besides the (we’re assuming) more street-friendly engine. This car would be ideal for club events and trips to the ice cream store alike.

At a price a mere fraction of a real 934, it’s a car we’d be happy to own and enjoy the way it was meant to, while the priceless, real examples sit tucked safely away in museums and private collections.
