Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo: Fastest Car Around the Nürburgring
Daily Slideshow: Porsche's WEC world champion race car has shed some weight. It is even faster without the FIA limitations and has shattered the Nürburgring record.
919 Hybrid Evo
Having had a successful run in the World Endurance Championship, (WEC) the Porsche racing sports car has been tearing it up at tracks around the world. Free of the regulations, the engineers at Porsche have been able to unleash the full potential of the 919 Hybrid Evo onto the most demanding race tracks of the world. World champion driver Timo Bernhard recently drove the Porsche racecar on a mesmerizing lap around the green hell.
Last Porsche to Do it
Before Bernhard set Nordschleife on fire, the lap record for the track was held for over 35 years by the Porsche 956 C. Back in '83, a record of 6 minutes and 11.13 seconds was set. The 919 Hybrid Evo's blistering lap beat the old record by over 51 seconds. Bernhard's lap was recorded at 5:19.55.
No Holds Barred
The monster of a racecar we see before us today is an even faster version of the WEC champion Porsche that took the title home three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017. Not having to adhere to the regulations of the FIA, the Porsche team has gone wild with the race car, pushing the boundaries of its absolute potential. The 2.0-liter turbo-hybrid V4 is capable of producing 1,160 HP.
Even Faster
It is also a whole 86 pounds lighter than the WEC race car, dropping weight down to 1,872 lbs. The car has been stripped of its A/C system, wiper, and lights. The aerodynamics have also been improved with the addition of a new rear wing, new front diffuser, and side skirts. Altogether, the new aero parts are said to provide an extra 53% downforce!
Kings of Norschleife
Just like the car, the man behind the wheel is of world championship caliber. Timo Bernhard is not only a 24 Hours of Nürburgring winner and a Le Mans winner, he is also the reigning WEC world champion.
Flying Lap
Even to those unfamiliar with endurance racing or motorsport in general, this 5 minute and 19-second lap around the world famous Nürburgring is a must watch. The history-making nature of the lap aside, watching this blistering lap front inside the cockpit of the 919 Hybrid Evo will be 5 or so minutes well-spent, guaranteed.
