996 Slantnose

A Porsche 996 Slantnose is the dream car that you never knew you wanted until now.

Slantnose. The word conjures up images of excess that defined the ‘80s. It is one of the most iconic Porsche 911 models. Most people remember the 930 version but there was also a rare 964 slantnose that Porsche produced back in 1994. These cars bring serious money in the market today. On the other end of the scale is the humble 996.

While it is slowly getting the recognition it deserves, and there are some great versions of the 996 out there. It has always been one of the least-loved 911 models. So, what would happen if you combined the beleaguered 996 and the loved slantnose and built a 996 slantnose?

Ryan Krause of Crucible Coachworks is doing just that. In a shop located in York, PA Krause and his team are building a dream car that most never would even imagine would be possible.

But after seeing some renderings and watching some videos of the build posted on the Crucible Coachworks YouTube channel, we think Krause is onto something. Not a single car has yet been completed. We are literally watching the birth of a custom car.

However, the excitement and anticipation builds as we learn more about each detail.

What Is It and Why?

Underneath it all is a 1999 Porsche 911. It marked the beginning of the 911 water-cooled generations. So why is this car being turned into a slantnose? “We wanted to make what Porsche would have possibly made if they wanted to bring back the slantnose between the 996 and 997 generation 911s,” said Krause.

Hey, that is good enough for us. We all love a slantnose so why not make one out if the more modern generation cars? As you can imagine this is a full custom build. The body panels are all hand-made in steel. The bumpers are custom made as well. Up front a 997-generation bumper is used along with modeling clay. This will serve as the plug that will be used for the final bumpers to be made in either fiberglass or carbon fiber.

Pop-Up Blocker

Pop-up headlights. Everybody loves them, and they are part of the original slantnose cars. However, the 996 slantnose will not have pop-up headlights. The team decided that this car is going to utilize a single row of thin LED headlights between the bumper and fender.

They still look cool based off the rendering we have seen. Out back the taillights are standard 996 fare. Although they sit below a massive wing and above a large rear diffuser.

Power and Handling

Lift the engine cover and marvel at the vastness of space. The engine bay of the prototype has no engine at the moment. Krause says that he wants the car to perform as well as it looks. So, the standard 3.4L flat six making 296 horsepower was not going to cut it.

If you commission a 996 slantnose build of your own the Crucible Coachworks folks will allow you to select nearly any Porsche engine you would like.

They would even make an EV version if that is your thing. The suspension details are also up in the air at the moment, so we will have to wait a bit longer for those specifics.
