Manual Trans Rebuild

I know this has been discussed but thinking I'd start a fresh thread for any new ideas. I think my transmission is "fine" but it sometimes gives me trouble. I have yet to find someone who would work on one of these transmissions, including some shops that are renowned and known for working on these transmissions (weird, I know). Is it a fact that these transmissions can't really be worked on - like replacing synchros, and they must just be replaced? I can get a new trans for like.. $14k. Is that really the best option? Has anyone here had their trans worked on? I'd love to hear about it.

I think the shop probably just doesn't want to do the work. There hasn't been much mention of people rebuilding the transmissions. I'm guessing cause they don't really fail to often. Someone with a lot more knowledge of the subject will chime in.

2009 C2S 200K miles
What year is your car? Have you tried replacing the fluid with what is spec'd in your manual? Read up here: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...-gear-oil.html
I really thought I was needing a rebuild a long time ago but changing the fluid with PTX and then every 30K miles or so really has transformed my transmission to being livable.
If you really want to have your transmission worked on, I recommend contacting a Porsche speedshop that race-preps these cars. There are many out there. Where do you live? Have you contacted and chatted with some of the more known shops like http://www.gboxweb.com/rebuild2.html
Peace

Yep, I run PTX. Shifter alignment tool? That's just the tool that holds your shifter while you put in the shift cables right? I used that as well.

Folks here will say the alignment tool helps transmission performance... IMO, all it does is adjusts your shifter to stand straight up using the adjustments under the boot. All the clicking, springing, etc is done inside your transmission and the cable rod ends are pinned to the transmission so it should be immune from movement. The shifter is just a floppy push/pull lever with no intelligence. Whatever...

Shifter alignment helped me with 1-2 shifting. Just a little bit off center. But yeah I’ve seen a lot of early 997s with MT transmissions replaced, including mine.

We have a 996.2 in right now that was tough to shift from 2-3 under load. They already had a numeric shifter so we upgraded to numeric cables thinking there might be a small chance it would help but even if it didn’t, the numeric cables are still a great upgrade. Low and behold, the increased precision of the cables made all the difference. Still waiting on the PTX to arrive and then we will change the gear oil and send it home.

If you do have a serious issue and needs rebuild (Which is rare) I would suggest buying a used Manual Transmission. Less 997 downtime and these Manual Transmissions are pretty much bulletproof.
A used one from a 997 with lower mileage in the 50-80K range should last forever.

Thanks Groove, you always have good input. Any idea the best place to look? I'm thinking this is probably a two or three year time horizon; everything I hear is these are bullet proof, and mine isn't bad I don't think (though not sure what bad would be, have very little experience driving 997s except my own) - maybe we'll try new cables. I'll take a peek on eBay too and see what those used bits look like.
