Yup this is my thought exactly. I remember Boxsey talking about this very thing years ago.

Yes, the guide bars are made exactly for the reason of producing the correct angle for the harnesses.

Cheers guys ...

Robt .. Send me some CF and I'll put some polish in a jar and send it
only time I stare if when I'm out of time to drive ... Or petrol!

Re belts ... Thanks for the comments...
As I commented above those diagrams are in the section re HANS devices only.
As far as I could see there was nothing in the rest of the doc on that angle re shoulder straps... Will search

Essentially the stock seat belts also run up and over doesn't it? Those harnesses are a factor better than the stock belts in my Opinion (at this time)

About the bar - safe to have one with a child seat? Are they easily removable?

Matt, I had a look through that tech document from Schroth and it appears to have changed since I got may harnesses. The older document was much clearer about the angle entry to the seats being within 20 degrees of the horizontal. With or without Hans. The wisdom of this is that in a heavy impact if the harnesses are angled steeply downwards (by not using a guide bar or a cage bar), the force of impact is directed at your lower spine. Having the harnesses horizontal to your shoulders or by using the stock belts that are also at shoulder height, there is less impact force exerted on your lower spine.

The BK harness guide bar is probably a 15 minute job to put in or out. I think you would struggle to fit a child seat in with one in place, even if it was safe.

Cheers Boxsey ... Will check out with the chief scrutineer at the national in Nov
... 15 min for the bar sounds easy enough
But it's clearly preferable to go horiz ... Seat harness slots might take too much strain

Are you planning to put a child seat (or anyone for that matter) in the back with non-folding seats in the front?

Hi Jason ... Yes - there's enough space
To get the little monkey in while she's still a toddler
But it's a rare occasion so not too much hassle

Just a heads up; if the car flips onto its roof it will be extremely difficult to slide the seat forward, if not impossible. And if there is a fire you can forget about whoever is in the back...

This happened a few years ago to a BMW M3 with non-folding racing seats that went on web-forum (i think it was bimmerforums) gathering/drive in southern California. The back seat passenger burned to death. I'm guesing that rear passenger egress is a major reason why you won't find any car sold in any country with a back seat and non-folding front seats?

almost 2 years have gone by on this process ... thought I'd summarise as a review

so this is where it all started (thanks to 911Pervy's info)

Vehicle Identification No. - WP0ZZZ96ZLS401597
Model Designation - CARR.2 COUP Year - 1990
Order Type - 964331
Engine Code - M64.01
Transmission Code - G50.03
M058 - Impact absorbers, front and rear
M150 - Operation with leaded gas
M383 - Sports seat, left, electrically vertically adjustable
M387 - Sports seat, right, electrically vertically adjustable
M573 - Air conditioner
M650 - Electrical sliding roof

Some irony now that all the bolded codes above are removed (even if reversible)
Car arrived with coil-overs, aero mirrors, LWFW, heat delete, LSD & buckets, boxter rims & a newly rebuilt 3.8 - so lots

and since then I've done some Go, some Lightening & some Show mods ...

Go
- RS Gear shifter & linkage conversion to helm/rose and uni joints
- RS Carbon front strut
- 993 rear brakes
- Electric Power Steering (frunk) in place of stock belt-driven system
- RS bumper ducts fibreglassed into bumper
- TPS based mapping to 300+ hp
- GT3 RS engine mounts
- Momo Porsche Cup alcantara wheel
- 400 cc injectors
- SRF brake fluid
- F1 transmission mount stiffening insert

Lightening
- RS Carpet kit (w. sound proofing partial delete)
- RS door cards (stitched suede)
- Cup style Ali floor boards & Rennline pedal backing
- aircon delete (inc. mount)
- centre consol & radio delete (bluetooth replacement)
- dual exit custom x-cross exhaust
- headlight washer delete

Show
- Cup I's & Speedlines (winter/summer?)
- Engine bay spruce up
> polished intakes; fan, housing & engine tin powdercoated
> billet valve covers
- Tore's centre locking
- Bumper & stone chips resprayed
- Side markers & indicators whited
- Paint correction and polishing
- Seat backs painted body colour
- Gus' rear light fix
- 993 wiper arms
- SRP pedal set
- window tints (sun is hot here!)

and replaced or fixed (thanks to RL964Forum)
- the electric side mirrors function & cracked glass
- front windscreen
- rear bumper heat shields
- rotors & pads (out with orange, in with yellow pagids)
- headlight vacuum adjustment system
- abs sensor clean
- frunk release cable (& installed backup)
- spoiler wall
- door jamb light switch short
- front hooter
- windscreen washer nozzles (unblocked)
- front & rear lid supports
- thermostat replaced
- all engine tin hardware & intake clamps replaced
- all oils & liquids changed (oil 4x, gb 3x)
- error code clearing w. Tore's ecu reader
- alternator refurbed
- 993 wiper blades and 2 spring arms

phew ... and to think I haven't done the reprinted/rotated dials, brake duct hoses or sunroof delete yet!

Lovely engine bay. I hope to do something similar to dress up the engine. Congrats to you on a job well done.

Thanks for the update. I was totally falling behind on all of your recent modifications, so the recap definitely helps. Lots of good things going on here. Can't wait for the drive report!

From the 1st post in this thread...

I guess its ok .. its only got 75k kms on it. Straight lines too.
Have I jumped the gun? Gone to deep? Made a mistake?!
I'm so glad you didn't buy the stock, clean low miler.... where's the fun in that!

Thanks Ric ... I'm learning slowly but still far behind your DIY skills!

Udo ... Lol I re-read that too just before my post above
... The thread is a bit of a journal so I can remember all the detail later
To answer your questions ...

Some tuning to do - hopefully next week one night - and a weigh bridge would be nice
But car is running solid, not hunting, lots of grunt and hopefully I'll find the braking improved when next there's a track day ...
With the 993 rears and stock bias adjuster I can sense a difference in the degree to which the nose dips under hard braking at speed (ie less now)
But despite a few tests the car didn't get loose or wiggly, just felt less nose-sure if that makes sense - need track to tell more

But with the wife-friendly exhaust I think the gains from injectors are negated somewhat (sadly?).
The non-motec fuel mgmt is likely at its limit and isn't using the knock sensors.

Net-net I'm just really enjoying having a pretty car again w/o all the tatty linen, nicks
and scratches .. But def not missing the oil leaks! ha!

The merc a168 pump is slightly heavier (comp our 225s to their skinnies I guess??) but steering feels more solid .. Again need track time to flesh out the detail there

And Vandit - if you're there - the F1 trans insert has not changed the feel of the shift
but I did have a chunk of 20mm rubber mat wedged in there (PO)
which must have been doing its job as the stock mount is quite weakened and soft. The f1 mount stiffened that up in a tidy way.

Hope to get some vid soon and maybe some rolling pics ...
Take care and thanks for all the encouragement so far!
Matt

Just spent the morning reading your entire thread.
Epic and impressive stuff, you have a great 964, love the details.

cheers Poli - very kind.

Just a quick report back on the drive ... it was a perfect sunny day and the roads were quiet.
Got a puncture on the first foray on Wednesday so had to swop out to the 17in Cups.

The non-cosmetic work was basically the x-joined exhaust, bigger injectors, electric power steering & 993 rears...but I really feel like the new interior tweaks and polished surface adds to the feel of the car.

The first pass tune worked well and with a little sensitivity/gentleness on the pedal at low speeds,
the car is smooth and calm, but with the RS carpets etc.. in and the door cards done the interior
sounds tighter and less rattly .. and the car pulls very nicely especially in 3rd & 4th

I know I promised videos .. no excuse but hopefully soon .. but over all the thrill is NOT gone
it is back .. and it is heaven. The 964 is a lithe little demon, light but convicted in the corners and braking is solid and well mannered.
The exhaust note is higher and about 20% quieter at low revs .. which is great ... not a hint of drone.

I want to bleed the brakes some more - I can't remember after the GT3 & the Cup
but I think the pedal can be rock hard at the top right?
As I said tho I need some track time to see how much longer they stay un-spongey
but its doubtless the added rear pistons will help.
I love the slightly heavier steering feel.

I had two esteemed passengers - both guys I race with - one with a mexico 993 RS (1270 kg with aircon etc.. but low kms)
and the other with a 73 T based RS replica (weighs 920kg! with a 3L SC engine)
and I'm glad that they were both impressed at the power of the 3.8 (effect of lightening), the 'sorted' interior and the overall tightness of the car
neither payed much attention to the engine bay beside to see holes left behind by the removals
.. but that's ok .. the bay's just for looking while you prepare/wait to go driving

neat solution for a small house!

how the 993 GT2 belts are secured - top front edge of parcel shelf

Jemima guards jealously

younger cousins (one's a playa, the other a bit of a brute)
