Next step is to repair the sloppy shifter. I am following v2Rocket_aka944's writeup and using the thrust bearing and bolt repair. I ordered the parts from McMaster Carr yesterday and they should be here some time this week. I figured since the shifter pin has worn and tapered significantly, and the shift rod is probably no better, this repair should do the trick. I will post pics of this once I get the parts in the mail and start doing the repair!

After repairing the shifter, I can honestly say that I am super pleased with how well it shifts. There is still a minor amount of play and I think I have to work that out at the transmission. Will post pics today of a lot of the progress that I've been making!

The car has been back in the garage for a few days for the upcoming work.

First thing was removing the tape and paper from the door frame and weatherstripping. Using automotive Goo Gone:

Most of it came off of the weatherstripping bt I'm having a hard time getting it off of the metal:

Also started re-cleaning the engine bay. Got the corrosion off of the cam housing and got it cleaned up:

After the dash cover was removed..The glue is still on there or it has discolored the dash. Seems as though the glue had been on there for well over a decade:

Next phase is to replace the ISV hoses and vacuum lines. Long term winter project is a new clutch. But the good news is that I continue to work on the car weekly.

Got the car back in the garage and am tracing a coolant leak. Looks to be the radiator and from the puddle something on the right side of the engine seems to be seeping. It in my leaks after the car is driven and then parked. A visual inspection revealed no obvious leaks. I'm wondering if the coolant drain plug on the block has a bad crush washer or if its slightly loose. Time to do some digging.

All I used was a window weld. I know its not the preferred method but it worked and was inexpensive. I got the tube at Home Depot.

Mazda,

It's looking great! I have got to get the bits of corrosion of my car as well. It is here and there. Tape and goo and the like on a 944, I still can't imagine our cars with owners that didn't hold them in the highest regard.

Our cars deserve so much more than duct tape and gobs of glue.
They are works of art for Gawdsake, right fellas?!

Finally got around to ordering the hoses for the idle control valve and the plastic clip and the metal retainer for the heater flap. Will be nice to fix the idle and get it so the heat works properly. As always I will update this thread with pics of the repair work.

First wave of new parts came in today! I ordered quite a few more though, so I'm not sure when I'll start in on replacing things. The sooner I sell my 86 944, the sooner I can have this car back in the garage for good.
