Default Range anxiety in the winter.

I found this review interesting. This is not a negative EV review. It shows great results simulating what would happen if your stuck in a traffic jam. Although not a Taycan review I think it can relate to most EVs. It's interesting how the car uses a lot less energy when standing still and creeping. I give the guy credit for having the patience to do this.

This is one of my concerns with potentially owning an EV, as up here it can sometimes get pretty cold in winter (we were in the negative digits F for the past few days), and I have to keep my car parked in the parking lot at work for much of the day, a few days per week.

Otherwise, however, the Taycan or E-tron GT are some of my favorite EV's out there right now...

When the trip started today it said 260 miles of range then quickly changed to 120 miles of range. I guess the cold weather cost 100 miles?

My wife drives her Audi E-tron GT 90 miles a day. In the cold at an 80 percent charge the range is about 150 miles. Car gets the job done & It gets her to work and back. Charging at home saves a ton of money. All EVs loose 10 to 30 percent charge in the winter. You just have to know these facts before you buy one to see if it's for you.

In addition to her daily work commute, my wife drives her Kia Niro EV once a week to see her mom, 180 mile round trip. This was the first week since last March that she didn't take her car and took my E Class instead. Usually that trip costs her $4. It cost her $30 with my car.

Because the torque is addicting.

This video is good. Based on my observations during this cold snap and previous ones, it seems that the main issue is not so much the car itself, but rather the charging infrastructure's inability to handle extreme weather conditions.

I was just at the dealer picking up a 2024 Cayenne S to drive while my Cayenne GTS is being serviced. I took the opportunity to talk to my salesman about Taycan and again sat in one. Salesman says the Taycan loses about 30 - 40% of advertised range during our winters (last night -28C, today's high -18C). He says it isn't published yet but Porsche is working on a long range Taycan that will presumably have less power but will be geared to address range anxiety. I guess we'll see about that.

I'm not bashing Taycan (I've driven a Cross Tourismo model and really liked it), but for me, the packaging is not right. I think the sedan is a good car for 2 + 2 driving, but it isn't a good 4 passenger sedan. My teenagers would have to fit their boots into the floor well and with their faces 18" from the front seat back. It is just too tight in my opinion. If you don't carry passengers often, then maybe it is a better fit. When it comes to range, the salesman says, realistically in the winter the Taycan sedan tops out at 200 kms (120 miles). So, for me, that is a drive around town car. At $180,000CAD, I need more flexibility than that. So, I'll wait until the technology can deliver 500 kms in any weather condition and jump in - but it won't be a Taycan with the current interior packaging.

The standard battery Taycan actually tops out at 196 miles in Fahrenheit single digits ambient, plus battery will do better.

If you want a desirable Porsche these days you can; Pound sand; Pay over sticker, buy a Taycan...

Default Winter range experiment

I live in northwest Michigan and knew when I replaced my Cayenne S with the Taycan GTS ST there would be some compromises and planning required. So far after 6000 mi I’m still thrilled with the car. My winter experiment has a set of Pirelli snow tires on the Mission E wheels that came on the car, and the luxury of Level 2 charging it inside my garage overnight. These 2 pics of yesterday’s short trip on snow & ice covered roads are informative, and the first time I’ve tried Range mode (v. Normal, where my cold weather battery loss was greater earlier in the week). As you can see, ambient temp 16F, battery SOC at start 73% (range est 162 mi). After the 33 mi round trip in Range, and speeds 30-45 given the road conditions, it used 16% battery and the range est decreased by 39 mi. I’m about to park it outside at the airport for 10 days and will be interested to see the SOC loss over that period.

The driving enjoyment is simply on par with my highly-modified 911 Turbo, both in handling and acceleration afforded by the torque. I flew high performance military aircraft and never experienced the discomfort of feeling my brain move through its cranial fluid and bounce off the back of my skull, which is what happens in Launch mode with the car. Mine is a GTS ST, so I’m certain those of you who own the T or TS are even more impressed. There are surely compromises, but for my use it’s a wonderful car.
