Over dinner on the Porsche Taycan launch event, Lutz Meschke, deputy chairman of the board, dropped the mother of all hints that the next generation Cayman and Boxster will become pure-electric sports cars.
“The 718 just fits EV, doesn’t it?” he said. “The next generation of these cars would be a good time to go all-electric.” Seems fairly conclusive to us, and there was yet more surprise when we asked whether an electric Cayman would be all-wheel driven. “Yes, it needs to be, that makes sense.” Well at least they’ll be parking the unloved flat-four engine.

Looks like I'll be picking up the PDK GT4 RS after all. The whole light-weight RWD chuckable ethos of the Cayman and Boxter blown away.

Outside of the GT4 and the Spyder, the 718 line up is pretty disappointing. Going to the 4-cyl killed this platform. All electric could be the perfect solution to re-energize it (no pun intended). If they keep the electric version in the same price range, it could truly be the first mass produced electric sports cars. The original Tesla roadster and the new one are too low volume and expensive.

I fail to see what having an EV Boxster does to make it less chuckable - power and short wheel base is what's required there and a low CG - all of those things an EV will have and instant tourque to apply after "the chuck" - seems like a match made in heaven to me done by the right company.

It has a shorter wheelbase than my 991.2 GT3, or a Tesla Model s, or Taycan.
Yes it weighs 4,000 lbs, but that’s far less than the 4950 lb Model S or 5100 lb Taycan.
So a smaller car with a shorter wheelbase and 471 ft lbs of torque is very chuckable. I really enjoy that aspect of the car.
I worry Porsche wouldn’t give an electric cayman/Boxster the same amount of power as a Tesla M3P so that people would be forced to choose between major power in the Taycan or chuckable but relatively low power in the electric cayman/Boxster, but it wouldn’t have both like the Tesla Model 3 Performance.

Allows Porsche to keep the 911 to keep using the ICE motor and give the Cayman a new identity. No need to protect the 911, Porsche can not create a full blown EV sports car.

not clear what the weight of a 718 EV would be - if they can get the drive train efficiency up they can lower the battery capacity for weight savings - also i’d consider ultimate range less of and issue for an EV sports car like a boxster - f they can get to like 310 wh/mile (2012 Model S level efficiency) that’s 3.2 mil/kwh - and a 60 kwh battery would be close to 200 mile range - that’s about 2/3 rd of the Taycan battery - so boom you’ve saved that in battery weight already - and smaller car less wire - smaller battery less cooling - 800 v system should be way better here by that time less wire and shorter runs...i’m not convinced the EV 718 has to be 4000 lbs...also weight savings if it’s not AWD...again very acceptable for an EV sports car - that’s even the goal - if porsche can get to model 3/Bolt level efficiency of 250 wh/mile - that’s 4 mi/kwh and they could go to a 50 kwh battery - couple that with some mild improvement is battery energy density - like we are getting with the 2020 Bolt from LG battery improvements which is up to 66 kwh from 60 for same weight/volume - and maybe sub 3750 lbs is straight forward and work to get more
