Test drove a Tesla Model X performance
#16
Just want to say E-Tron sales is disappointing to say the least. Tesla is selling a lot more Model X even it's a 3 year old and much more expensive car. Appreciate your analysis but for conclusion reviews that matter most are always those that reviewers have their own money on the line.

I have not driven a Model X, so thanks for your write-up. I'll just quibble in one area:
My wife and I adapted very quickly to the one-pedal approach of Tesla. In fact, I now find it annoying in my other cars that I can't control my speed so easily. Randy Probst seems to like it, too, in videos I've seen of him on a track.
I think Porsche has made a mistake not making regeneration part of the go pedal, at least as an option. The Tesla brake pedal is a traditional system - fluid is pumped to brake calipers. The Porsche brake pedal is a complex hybrid system. In the Tesla, all braking is regenerative until you touch the brake pedal - you know when you've wasted energy to friction. There is no downside that I can see, after you get used to it.
At 67, apparently neither of us is too old!

Some people don't like change and will not change, no matter how better it is.

I also really like 1 pedal driving. We had it in our Volt and now in our Model X. I also think Porsche made a mistake here. Perhaps they could have just made it a user configurable setting.
Once you get used to using only 1 peda, its kinda annoying when you have to reach for the second pedal. Call me lazy...
It also takes a while to master the driving technique. I won't say who (cough, wife) but others in the family still aren't quite as smooth as they could be. As a racer, I've found my throttle control has improved as I became more comfortable with that single pedal. As anyone who has driven one knows, any tiny fluctuation "from optimal" is immediately noticeable. You will find yourself pulsing fwd/aft in cars driven by folks who are not used to it. Single pedal driving requires throttle control to be much more precise. I have seen the "payback" in ICE powered cars when Ice Racing, Drifting, and doing Skid Pad work.
We love our Model-X but are very much looking forward to replacing it with the Taycan. The X has been a supremely useful vehicle but we've had it for almost 5 years now and its time to see what more mainstream manufacturers can do when they deliver a 200+ mile EV. I test drove an I-Pace for a relatively long trip and it wasn't a step up from all that the Model-X has to offer. I'm expecting much more from the Taycan...

Burning Brakes
One pedal driving is the best once you get used to it. I can see where it wouldn't be ideal for the track though, it would be like severe lift off oversteer. So having the option to turn it off makes sense, but I don't understand why Porsche wouldn't at least make it an option for the Taycan. Hopefully they come to their senses and add it later as an over the air update.

Randy Pobst is in a video driving a Model 3 on a track. As he described what he was doing, he mentioned using the one-pedal regen, and clearly liked it.
After he first drove drive a M3P, he suggested to Tesla that they let him help them tune the track mode software. They agreed.

Respectfully, please stop telling me I’ll get used to the intrusive regenerative braking on throttle lift off and that I should/will actually like it.
If you want to say that YOU actually like it, fine. Just don’t tell me what I like. I know what I like. And I don’t like that.

Anyone who drives an EV (with regen) on a regular basis will notice right away when the let a non-EV driver friend take it for a spin. They simply have no experience with the feature. They all kinda look surprised the first time they drive. Its a bit of a learning process.
I really hope Porsche eventually gives us the option to turn it on...

Someday 1-pedal driving will be like the PDK v. Manual debate.
Calling my shot now.
