Thanks for the links - good read.

Before I purchased my Spyder I had a serious look at the Cayman (which I had originally wanted). The Spyder is such a good package that I simply could not pass it up.

Even if you overlook the weight savings, the spyder has a superior suspension set up, a LSD and GT3 RS buckets standard.

Probably a subject for another thread, but like any other Porsche, is entirely personal preference.

Initially I couldn't see ordering it with anything but a manual, being a "back to basics" car. But after taking delivery can see that, even with the weight reduction and rudimentary top, it is just as modern and sophisticated as any other new Porsche, and therefore perfectly suited for the thoroughly modern PDK transmission. I still wouldn't have it any other way than with the manual and sport shifter, but I'm sure PDK would make this scalpel of a car that much sharper in the twisties.

Personal preference. If you like a stick and don't have one in the garage, then get a stick.

There is no doubt, at all, in my mind that a PDK vs stick by same driver on same track, PDK will turn faster laps. Never once did I feel cheated that PDK was doing my work for me.

I love tracking my stick RS and I equally love tracking my PDK Spyder.

A "bad" choice cannot be made

You're welcome!

BTW, just came back from an appt. in the city and saw a great looking Slate Gray 928 S4 — though it caught me out as the owner had done rear wing-delete. Very strange to see late taillights with no rear wing....

Best,

pete

Great write-up Pete. Your observations, as usual, are spot on. Sounds like you had a fun trip.

I too found the armrests hurting my left elbow initially. But after a few thousand miles, it no longer is a problem -- perhaps I have developed some calluses on my elbow?

I had the Spyder at Laguna Seca for the first time a week ago today. Wow, what a fun time. Some pics below. For those of you who haven't yet tracked your Spyder, go do it! I think you will be shocked, shocked, shocked what a stock Spyder can do.

Peter, your silver Spyder looks great on those track photos. Do tell, please, how it actually felt on the track and any other observations you may want to share with us re: brakes, power, shifter, balance, etc. z356

Thanks guys. So, what can it do? Lap, after lap, with a smile on my face. Seriously, though, the car was just terrific -- it is so balance and poised, that you are able to carry so much speed through the turns -- the lack of any body-roll, and the balance, gives you so much confidence. The brakes (standard steels) and the Pirellis held up just fine. On some parts of the track (up the hill, after turn 6, and again on the front straight), the Spyder felt a bit underpowered -- that would be my only "complaint." I had some fun with a Champion Werks TT -- he would pass me on the front straight easily -- then again, I think he has double the HP of a Spyder! But all in all, the Spyder is fantastic on the track -- I had a blast. It is a little giant killer -- classic Porsche.

I assume, too, that 0-60 times would be faster with PDK in the Spyder vs. a stick?

I was originally adamant about getting a Spyder with the 6 speed, but I'm not quite as sure about that anymore. My wife would love having the PDK.

4.9 manual

4.8 PDK w/o Sport Plus

4.6 PDK w/Sport Plus

But 0-60 is overrated, chose whichever you and wife would enjoy best.

Thanks. Where do those number come from?

I agree that 0-60 times are overrated (if that's all I cared about I'd buy a Chevy Z06), but they are still indicative of the kind of acceleration/speed and "fun factor" that you might get on the street.

As far as what my wife and I would prefer, clearly she would prefer the automatic/pdk. I will have to drive one myself to see if I think it takes away from the "fun" factor.

Wow, 4.4 seconds! Makes you wonder what they could have done in the same conditions with the PDK?!
