With an average of less than one car per dealer available, it seems to me that they absolutely have controlled production of the Spyder.

I agree with Alan... Remember it's a 2011 model year and we still have yet to hit 2011! Porsche planned this one out just right IMHO.

I don't want to buy what a dealer thinks is a "perfect" configuration, I want to build my own. I also would like to see some consistency with what is initially stated by PCNA when the car is introduced with actual reality. Case in point, many publications state specifically that the Spyder is not a limited production vehicle and that Porsche will continue building it. Thus far I have received three responses when I have asked four different dealers if Porsche will be building these cars in early 2011. One dealer says no, another says yes and two others won't offer a response. WTF!! I hope they're reading this because it can certainly make for a frustrating purchasing experience and it is a turn off.
The Spyder is not a "limited production" vehicle; there is not a set number of cars for the production run. However, they will definitely not continue to build the car, as the end of production for the entire 987/997 platform is imminent (whether there will be a Spyder based on the new platform remains to be seen).

This car pretty much comes with the options I want. I'd like an Aqua blue one (to match my other car) but it is hard to find and I have no patience at all. So this is the next best fit.

re: Alan Smithee's "Seems like your frustration is that Porsche's production schedule doesn't coincide with your purchasing schedule. Open allocations have been available all year, with dealers forced to order safe colors/options if individual buyers didn't commit to an order."
So Alan, your idea of good production management in a company is to allow only early adopters to chose and everyone else to accept what is chosen for them. That is not what I was taught at Wharton. Why couldn't Porsche AG spaced out production in Germany all along the model year so that customers that want a specific Spyder for Spring 2011 delivery can order it in the next few months. It contradicts your other statement "The Spyder is not a "limited production" vehicle; there is not a set number of cars for the production run". I just want consistency if someone is going to argue a particular point of view. I do agree with you that they have 'controlled' production for the Spyder - just not controlled it VERY well. But we might just have to agree to disagree on this particular point. z356

Let me point out a few things.
Porsche stated that the Boxster Spyder is not a "Special Edition". they never said it's not a limited production car. There is a big difference in the two. Special editions such as the RS60 Spyder or the recent 911 Sport Classic has a predetermined set production number which is determined by corporate and not dealer demand. When the Boxster Spyder made it's press debut early last November Porsche had a sales meeting with the dealer network and asked each how many they could sell. Allocations for the year were determined based on the dealer standings and their initial request. A few dealers that pre sold their allocations were awarded more cars, but these were Spyders that were non-changeable (more than likely cars that the initial buyers backed out of). So production was limited by dealer demand not Porsche Corporate. Also keep in mind that in a few months the next generation Boxster and 911 will debut. The production line will have to change over which takes time.

thanks to all for your help.
i found one that works that will be here in two weeks 6% off:
black [decided to go monochromatic, rather than order white]
"std leather alcantara" or buckets
sport exhaust, chrono
a/c, stereo
and some things i didnt need:
litronic
coloured centres
self dimming
i like this car's return to the original premise and look forward to it.
does anyone have Cup tyres on theirs yet?
now if only porsche had a diesel cayenne....

Cayman: What you say sounds plausible except for "but these were Spyders that were non-changeable (more than likely cars that the initial buyers backed out of)". Where did you hear that?
My understanding from feedback of fellow Forum members is that Spyder allocations (changeable) WERE available until just recently, although they have now seem to have 'evaporated' when dealers are asked about them. Alan Smithee's theory is that Porsche set a specific dateline to US dealers for ordering the balance of US Spyder production (e.g. mid-summer). If specific customers had not been identified by that date, the dealers basically were then forced to best-guess the 'whims' of future demand and take a chance on the Spyder colors/options THEY chose for them.
Quite frankly, that explanation makes more sense to me. Still, I see nothing praiseworthy of Porsche for setting such an arbitrary ordering dateline on car that is supposed to be a MY2011 model. Besides not giving later customers a chance at customizing their Spyders, the early production of all of these cars means that dealers will have to bear the cost of flooring these expensive vehicles until most are sold in the spring (hopefully). I doubt dealers are happy about either of those two things. So I give PAG and PCNA poor grades for creating the situation they now find themselves in regarding the Spyder.
I have heard that some .2 gt3 RS had been optioned by PAG or PCNA and 'dropped' unexpectedly on favorite dealers (Premier, etc) as rewards. We could see them doing the same with some Spyders. But overall, I think dealers themselves spec'ed the Spyders (the current 125+ unsold inventory in stock or transit), not PAG or PCNA. I don't think these are cars 'initial buyers backed out of', per your suggestion. One of the reason I think that is true is because current Spyder stock / inventory at each location reflects dealer's Modus Operandi all too well. Options on Southern California Spyders look nothing like those found in the more 'frugal' Mid-West Spyders! I saw that clearly in my weekend search looking at each dealer's inventory all across the US.
This generation 987 platform will continue to be used at least thru the spring of 2011 before it's replacement (at the very least). We are all expecting the Cayman CS / R to be produced after it's introduced at the LA Auto show in late November. Porsche is perfectly capable of producing both Spyder and Cayman CS /R on the same assembly line. Just like many of you, I have been to Zuffenhausen many times and that operation is extremely effective at multi-model production on the 'line'. All without missing a beat or a sweat and in a very effective 'just in time' arrival of assembly parts from sub-contractors & suppliers. So it didn't have to be just this way. z356

Not sure what all the fuss is on this. Allocations were available starting December 2009. What took you so long to decide you wanted one? First cars were delivered late March of which allocations were still available and changeable. Like Smithee stated sounds like you are more mad that Porsche's schedule didn't match your own buying schedule. The saying you snooze you looz comes to mind.

"Special Edition" "limited production" whatever the terminology you want to use, bottom line is if you were aware of the Spyder from the beginning, Nov 09 if not earlier, you knew there was a limit. Porsche stated the run would be 10% of boxster sales whatever that was, in the US or worldwide.
I think Porsche was right on with how they released the car. Who would want a niche car like the Spyder with a late 2010 release during the colder months with no time to really drive it. Order late 09, with a spring 2010 delivery gave them 6 months of warm weather across the entire US for sales. Build them, take their summer factory break and reevaluate the possibility of continuing the run. Those that thought the Spyder was a cool car but had a wait and see attitude, may have lost out. I know my dealer had their 3 allocations ordered and sold three days after the order banks opened, which was only days after the LA Auto show unveiling.
