Your best guess: How many 928's are left?
If there were roughly 61,000 built, how many roadworthy cars do you think remain... in the U.S... and elsewhere? So many have been lost to neglect, accidents, and whatever, I'd hazard a guess that maybe 15% of the total (so, roughly 9,000) would be a reasonable worldwide number.
Hey... whatever the number, it's a pretty exclusive club!
Way too many have come to a sad end.

Interesting topic indeed...maybe a starting point would be how many of the ~61,000 are actually Known?
By going through registry and any other info available?

Mark Anderson alone has parted out around 1000 of them. So my guess would be at least 1/3 of them have been lost either to accidents or partouts.

Insurance companies or others probably have the US registrations culled from state RMVs. Anyone got access?
20K, or a third, left and registered worldwide?

Race Car
This topic was brought up a while back. I remember reading someone thought about half were still in existence. Not necessarily all running but also not totaled, burnt or completely parted out either.

There's a neat website in the UK that tracks the numbers of cars (by model) on the UK roads using government road tax data:
Search results for 'porsche 928' - How Many Left?
Clicking on each model then gives a more detailed breakdown; FYI "SORN" on the graphs means "‘Statutory Off Road Notification" which means that the car still exists, but is officially "off the road" - so maybe project cars?
Obviously, the vast majority of these will be RHD cars.
So...710 in 2020, down from 1,080 ten years ago....
I've still yet to another "in the wild" over five years of ownership, despite the UK being pretty small compared to the US!

I recall reading that approximately 1/3 of total production made it to the US during the 17 year run (Not sure this is correct, but easy enough to verify with known published data). I also know that Porsche boasts the highest number of its cars still on the road, compared to any other manufacturer, and I beleive it. I would guess 2/3 are still out there, viable (i.e., not parts cars or rotted junk). So in the US, likely about 17,000, and RoW, about 23,000 (based on 61,000 approx cars total)

I get about 35k RoW, and about 26k US (and Canada).
I remember the subject coming up before, as Nate did.
A quick search didn't find it, but I remember taking a guess.
I think I broke it down into a couple different categories.
On the road, registered, legal and driving.
Fully intact, nothing wrong, but needing a good going through to get running and on the road.
In various stages of disrepair, but mostly intact and restorable.
Parts cars, ranging from a fair amount of things gone (entire motor, entire interior, ect) to stripped shells.
Gone. Crushed, cut up, scrapped, ect. Totally gone.
I'd guess 25%, 15%, 25%, 15%, 20% (in order).
No data or facts to back this up. Just a guess.

Over here we had about 30 S4/GTS's. I believe there were more earlier model 928's as initially they did not import air cooled 911's because of the high ambient temperatures. Unfortunately they faired terribly over here not to mention the wrecks . I know of one manual Gemballa special that is festering in someone's garage but other than that never seen or heard of any other early 928's left.
Of the original S4/GTS's some were exported by Expat owners like myself- a couple went to Holland and one to Norway that I know of. I know of three GTS's that are not running- one of them I "discovered" outside the Royal Family graveyard where HM Sultan Qaboos was laid to rest after passing away last year.
There is now only one example running and road legal over here according to my "intel" - guess who owns that! Needless to say I cannot use the excuse "that was not my Toyota Corolla"!
