Driving home on hwy today. About 1 hour. Got off hwy on off ramp and onto main street. Turned down stereo and made a turn. Steering pump was VERY loud and I had no assist. Noticed smoke from behind me.

Turned out a hose or seal or something failed and the PS fluid all blown out all over the RS of the motor and because of the hwy speeds, all over the back of the car.

There is no fluid left in the system so I cant tell where its leaking from, I need to refill it. tomorrow.

1. Has anyone else experienced a failure like this?
2. Its from the HP side
3. should I be concerned about the fluid all over the paint?


2007 Carrera S, 32K miles. engine rebuilt earlier this year.

Had a reservoir leak on a 986 s before due to tracking. The ps is a weakness. Boiling and over heating ps fluid would be the cause. It melted the reservoir.

well, we're not on the 928 board anymore that's for sure!

GPW, it sure does sound like a hose, but I haven't had mine long enough to get into the systems much yet. I would wash the fluid off the body surface sooner rather than later, but I do not believe power steering fluid will eat the paint like brake fluid does. Also, I have not looked to see if the 997 uses transmission fluid in the system versus actual power steering fluid. As you know, if transmission fluid is used (like in the 928 for those wondering why I am raising this issue), it is very flammable and will cause a carbeque. I do not know the flammable properties of power steering fluid, but regardless, I would wash it off all of the engine and header surfaces if it sprayed there, before driving it very far.

I have a super slow leak in my power steering resovoir... went dry and found it because of the pump noise. I just watch it now.... and of course it barely leaks at all now that I am. It is difficult to replace in that you have to remove the AC and other stuff... I said screw it.

You can check by looking straight down from above the resovoir and you will see leaking... if this is where it is coming from.

mine was dry around the pump and reservoir. not so much by the hoses. I think there is a quick connect there that may of failed, just to the lower right of the AC compressor.

I washed down the car when I got home to get the fluid off everything.

997 uses regular PS fluid not trans ATF like the 928.

Ok may of found the culpit. The fitting on the HP line next to the AC compressor has an O ring seal in it. The fitting came loose and blew out the seal. I replaced the seal and tightened back up. holding now it seems to be.
