Suggestions for online spec reference for assembly of 951 engines?
Torque values, clearances... factory manual type stuff, anyone?

SoI was wrong in an earlier post where I mentioned my oem turbo pistons didn't have a "series" stamp. Although faint, they are fortunately "1" series just like my n/a pistons & block.

But I'm check compatibility & found the rings are the same gap.

Why are the turbo rings beveled on the inside edge?
Are the n/a rings appropriate for boost?

Do the cheap goetz rings work on boost?

The 951 rings are different. NA rings can probably take boost fine, but the unknown here is long term reliability. I measured some goetze rings and their end gap was sometimes almost double the spec.

Maybe goetze is better for porsches but if you ever rebuild bmw engine, don't use goetze -ever.

Okay so I learned about 2.5 944 rings last night whilst tipsy on beer & fatigue... & this morning on the internet. The above link I posted this morning has pretty much all the information a person needs to know on Geotze rings. What came in your Porsche? What did the other Porsches have?
It also lists the material and shape of each rings, so you can tell if the rings have been replaced. Are the rings the correct orientation? I eventually figured out that the guy who sold me the 951 pistons put the secondary rings where the top rings should be.

As you can see, I did previously buy a complete set of rings for 100mm 2.5 pistons. But at the time I was looking to build a Kung Fu 16 valve 2.5 n/a engine. These new rings seem scrawny for the 951 application, and as Michael says... who knows how long they'd be good for. I do know this: they aren't going in W.I.L.S.O.N.

I went through the trouble of including this information for anyone else who has a 944 S up to the turbo.
Notice there are engine build dates.

By using these charts I was able to check the build date & reference the materials and shape of the piston rings.
I learned that the 944 S & the 87 up 944 came with the same piston rings as the TURBO. I love the late 944.

I will be reusing and re-gapping (if required) the rings that came out of WIlson. I have complete confidence in the rings and they will go back into the same cylinders they came out of. Only on turbo pistons this time.

Thank you mate!

I know it's ideal to replace rings, but last years compression test numbers were 150-165psi range, felt peppy & didn't burn excessive oil. The money is better spent on clutch or brake upgrade & in say 150,000 kms I will do a complete rebuild, main bearings & everything.
----------

-Checked ring gap for every Porsche ring. .020-.025" for top 2 rings and .030-.032" for bottom ring.
-Cyl bores look good & no finger nails catch.

-Due to being forged pistons from a timing belt mis-hap, there were sharp edges where the valves hit. Cleaned up with a die grinder (very low speed) & stone to help prevent detonation under BOOST also cleaned carbon off sides & top with wire wheel.
-Verified piston oiling holes were clean with drill bit.

now would be the time to fly-cut the pistons to make them non-interference in the event of belt failure...

Double check your ring gap:
WSM says:
ring 1: 0.20-0.45mm
ring 2: 0.20-0.45mm
ring 3: 0.38-1.40mm

0.45mm is 0.0177"

Lemme guess... you knew that off the top of your head. LOL.

I noticed in following various threads that each manufacturer of rings specs different gaps.

In my searching today and last night I found 2 favorite threads.

One is where there was Goetze ring confusion... finally settled by Pelican Parts stating and proving that Goetze now provides only 1 944 100mm ringset. Which is the 944 turbo ringset (I verified that the part number matched the original p/n in the catalogue pages above.... so, overbuilt but fully functional for low hp n/a applications).

Gap-wise, Mike Lyndsay became my mentor in this thread.... so I just kinda based what is loosely acceptable specs for the Goetze here: https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...-ring-gap.html
