So I finally got some time to get back into it. Starting tearing down the 81 engine to get it ready for transplant. The engine has great compression and I have been pleasantly surpriseD at every turn. Oil pan was very clean and the timing components are relatively fresh (all getting replaced anyway). Cam gears look decent so i an leaving them. I was a little surprised to see a porsche water pump with a metal impeller. I assume this was a rebuild?

Getting excited to get it dressed in CIS style soon!

Okay. Still cleaning and cleaning and more cleaning. Ready to start building it back up soon. Roger supplied a very small but expensive box of goodies including water pump, gaskets etc. This is still loads of fun !

Thanks Mark. I like doing this type of methodical assembly. It's nice to work in a controlled environment i.e. the engine on the stand. I really need to resist the slippery slope! So many possibilities but I need to stay focused.

And the engine is out as evidence by my son Guy's look of pride on his face I have a list a mile long of WYAIT items to handle in the engine bay etc. Also have to finish off the new engine and top it off with my refreshed CIS goodies.

I have never seen so many oil leaks on my life. Thank God I have a solvent sink, this is some dirty work!

While I am lucky to have spares and parts cars, it does make for a never ending decision process of the "which is better" game! Luckily all those oil leaks preserved the coatings on a l9t of hardware and fittings. The stuff is cleaning up beautifully!

Been busy working on the 79. Engine is out and stripped down. Heads are being rebuilt and I resealed the block. While I await some parts, I have started the process of engine bay cleaning and detailing.

This is where I am starting from, which is not too bad considering

I am switching out to the later style cross member so I can take advantage of newer motor mounts. I guess I will address steering rack bushings as well.

Every hose will be replaced (most already are). I am going to miss my original PORSCHE stamped hoses but at nearly 37 years old, I think the time has come to stop pushing my luck. Call me crazy, but I will keep them anyway in a box.

I have an order of items ready for yellow zinc plating. I really didn't want a full on resto of this car but I figure I may as well do the parts that I can get to while the engine is out.

Total spend to date........I'd rather not say

Starting cleaning the engine bay, coming out real nice. This is just round one.

I removed the crossmember today as well, updating to the newer style mounts and doing rack bushings as well.

One curiousity, as I pushed the car in and out of the garage....I noticed the TT spinning even though the trans is in neutral.

I had a productive day today. Replaced the crossmember and engine mounts today. While I was there, I replaced the rack bushings with the two piece Delrin bushings. Luckily, the rack was leak free.

Job was easy with the engine out although the earlier crossmember with the welded studs made the removal a little more involved.

More detailing to keep me busy but its coming along slowly!

Thanks, Daniel! I am enjoying the whole process although my wallet can't say the same thing!

I will say that having a parts car has been a God send. It's the little things that make the difference. For example, I switched to the later crossmember to be able to use the newer engine mounts. The crossmember I acquired years ago lacked the proper 13 mm T bolts and the original style early member didn't use them. A quick run out to the 83 produced these.

I can't stress how many times this scenario has repeated itself. It's a convenience thing as much as it a cost thing.

One step forward, one step back. Just moving the rack to exchange the cross member must have disturbed the seals where the tube meets the cast components. Leaking, just from sitting. Not even under pressure yet! Bone dry for 37 years!

Out it comes, out come my Delrin bushings!

I am still assembling the worlds largest pile of nuts, bolts, washers and assorted goodies for plating. This project is officially way out of hand!

Here is a shot of the items ready for plating. This is mostly engine items, I didn't disassemble brakes or suspension. For those of you keeping score, this was not the original direction of this project but it looks like I am going all in. Not sure what the remainder of the project will be like but the under hood detailing will be nearly concours quality.

Not pictured is over 200 clamps and 35lbs of hardware

And yes, there are two and even three of some items just to be sure
