A finger in a photo to block a license plate. Don't they realize they drive around all day with that license plate exposed!

"Just needs a little detailing and it will look like new!"

Read: "There are a lot of little scratches and dents that would show up if I removed that layer of dust."

Or: "These cars had great paint on them when they were new. There must be a good layer under there somewhere!"

Spend a minute vacuuming the old french fries from under the seats, hose the mud out of the mats, give it a bath. Take pictures on the wet driveway, or go find a nice home that better represents the stature of the car than that hillbilly rat trap shack you have in the background of your grainy pictures. Wonder why Wilhoit gets top dollar for those clean and well-photographed examples in his inventory?

Sorry, don't get this one.

An internet ad with license plate shown goes all over the world, at no cost and is avail to anyone willing to pay to hack the state DMV records. Driving the car around exposes the license plate to locations and dates it's driven. Big, huge difference in distribution, utility, and cost of avoidance. By your logic, you might as well publish your SSN card with number.

mechanic's special

Urban Dictionary - A vehicle listed as a "mechanic's special" on craigslist appears to be, at first glance, a remarkable deal. A mechanic's special is usually a vehicle listed far below its blue book value, with a few minor issues outlined that any competent backyard mechanic can easily diagnose and fix. This problems are usually referred to only in the vaguest of terms, such as a "clunking sound coming from the transmission" or "hissing sound from the radiator."

Of course, these problems turn out to be much more severe - such as a blown headgasket, thrashed transmission, detonated cylinder, and the like. The odometer reading is often conspicuously absent from the reading. The owner will often feign ignorance about vehicles in hopes of getting rid of it at a good price, but actually are often competent car people themselves.

The only valid use for a mechanic's special is as a parts vehicle, and only then once the owner has been talked down to a reasonable price.

Maybe I'm still stuck in preschool but, what could a person do with my license plate number? It's linked to my VIN on all DMV and insurance records. What good would it do in any case?
