There's deer & moose & bear etc. These are public roads. The best time to hit them is really early. That way there's enough light for these old eyes to see, but families have not packed up & left the house yet... and the temperature is still cool out, which keeps joggers & cyclists indoors.
2 cups of coffee and a quick snack down the hatch. Gramps fires up right away & I cautiously release the clutch pedal at the same time as applying the throttle ... gently. A few blocks out of my neighbourhood allows Gramp's engine to warm. He's running much smoother & the mighty 2 litre is feeling more powerful then with the low octane fuel we ran yesturday. 350 miles of heavy footed driving this weekend in the '78 924.
Once in the country the revs can climb to 5000-6000 rpm with no bother. The four speed manual gear box is well suited to these twisty hills... there's no place for 5th gear here... it's mostly 3rd & 4th, and for those treacherous tight, tight turns, you'll probably want 2nd.
These are Western Canadian Foothills at its best & the ditches can be death if you loose it, but the rewards of a very lively driving experience in any Porsche more than makes up for the effort involved. The trick is to get to know the network of the turns and avoid the boring straight. In the turns you feel like Mario Andretti!!
That right there for me is a death road. That the stretch I decide to see if in fact the car will really do 130 MPH.... right into a Moose. And that's how I become just another Moose victim.
I'm not sure this is the best place to post this, but I came across a very nice low mileage 924 on Ebay for fans to consider. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1977-Porsche...25.m3641.l6368

wow, rare and great looking color on a rare early car with rare (grey dash and door cards) interior.
Rare non sunroof car, with the rare early mirrors, rare spoilerless and wiperless hatch...rare rear 924 badge.
A great car for somebody looking for rare 924s....and even if its in US trim, its still beautiful.

i would buy that 924 if it was $4-5k. Looks in really good nick. typical details for a re-'79 are all there. A big bonus are the manual mirrors and sunroof delete.
Started on battery box repair because a $2.00 car wash left about $1.00 worth of water on the floor. I also have a minor sunroof leak. This is why I have been driving without carpet or headliner: because it'll help me identify any leaks. Before carpets are installed I need to know it'll stay dry and not end up "mildew city" like it was before.
There are some nice upgrades in store for Ol Gramps. Originally I wanted 100% authentic 924... but lately I've loosened up the expectations of such a beast. Partially because Porsche parts are NLA on so many parts. Very disappointed in them. No more fuel pump relay avail from Porsche! That's a sign we are doomed. But I will dwell on the positive not negative.
Driver side sun visor broke... so upgraded to 944 style.
Original seats have been at the dump for a while & I finally got some black 944 seats (front & rear).
I've been told that later seats are better but i think the best seats are the early ones with softer foam.
Regarding the battery tray thing...i was under the impression that i have a water leakage problem but it turned out that i actually put water trough the vent by mistake while washing the car and there was actually no battery area rust.
It appears like only the drainage points for the water are those 2 round "lids" that allow leakage onto the firewall. Would you agree? The late 944 drains out the sides, but I don't see anything like that on Grumpy Pants Gramps. If there was a side drain it is completely gone & I need to fab something.
