Turns out this "+" searching sort of works to AND search terms, but with 2 problems:
1) Can't include any spaces in there. e.g. search for rpm+wire, not rpm +wire.
2) Can't use big words. (Seriously, that's ridiculous.) e.g. won't work for "picture+Authority" although here's a thread that should get found.

Tried various advanced search techniques recommended in the FAQ and memeber help posts a few minutes ago...
1. Tried using double quotes around keywords as the "IMPORTANT..." headline recommends. I searched for "air oil separator." With quotes, the engine finds threads with all three words somewhere in the thread. It does not search for the specific quoted phrase. Without quotes, it will find either air, oil, or separator. It will not return more than 250 hits regardless.
2. Tried using boolean operators. Searched for air AND oil AND separator. I got, "The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search: AND, AND" as a response.
3. Tried using the + operator. Searched for air+oil+separator. I got, "The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : air+oil+separator" as a response.
I want to be able to search for experience with the Kokeln air oil separator. I'd like to be able to search like this: kokeln AND ("air oil separator" OR "air/oil separator").

I don't blame you. A working search function is not a lot to ask, but for some reason IB seems to be trying to reinvent the wheel. There are hundreds of busy forums with working search functions, even freeware solutions. I also don't remember the old search ever breaking anything, despite Adrian's comment. Strange indeed.

Seems like the + connector only works with small words, like 6 characters long. Hence, picture+Authority fails. Decklid+Stabilus also fails. Ridiculous.

Agreed - this is insane. The search should default to AND boolean and quotes should be used to designate exact phrases. Other forums of equal or great size such as bimmerforums seem to handle this no problem and are free - I have been paying for a membership for this?

without the "old" search, back in place, Rennlist loses a vast level of value. There is absolutely no excuse for screwing up the most important Porsche data base on the net. IT WAS NEVER BROKEN!

Maybe make the "return your search results by relevancy" the default selection from the dropdown box in advanced search and basic search if it is so vital for search to function properly.

It will order the results by date by default using the basic search, I will see if we can change that. Thanks for your feedback
