Default help on Jacks and Jack stand options

I am new to the Porsche DIY world and am looking to build up my tools. One thing I would like to be able to do is to do my oil changes and to change the engine mounts in the spring, as well as work on my wheels.
I was looking at jack stands and jacks today in Canadian tire and was a bit overwhelmed by the options.
What are the differences between the cheaper and crazy expensive ones? What should I be looking for? I figure for a '99 996 I would not really need anything more than a 2 - 2.5 tonne lift with a low profile rating.
Suggestions on brands for jacks and stands, options, capacity, etc...
What to stay away from...
Thank you
D

The thing with the higher rated stand is the stance is larger and more stable.
Although I use the "notched' type, they have always made me feel uncomfortable.
The screw or pin type is nicer, but more expensive.
One fail can lead to terrible consequences.

Canadian Tire has a Motomaster jack, low profile with long snout...that is what you want

here's a link, 2 ton, ~2 3/4" minimum height....most importantly a long snout... http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mo...0226p.html#srp
Motomaster version is 9-0226-6, Michelin version is 9-1052-2 http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mi...1052p.html#srp
While I primarily use hoist, also have used my Michelin one a bunch and has been strong...heavy solid steel, but tough...

Esco.
Preferred choice for Air cooled cars, not sure about the others. Car sits nice on the pads.

These aren't cheap, but look mighty convenient: http://www.jackpointjackstands.com/Home_It_Works.html

Although for not too much more than those plus a good jack, you could get a QuickJack.

Get the Esco ones. Expensive yes but they won't fold up on you and collapse.

If your floor is uneven? A three leg stand works better.

I've used a 2 ton CT jackstand for 20+ yrs. No issues. I have a 1.5 to 2 ton Jack I bought at the grand opening of the Weber st CT back in 1996..

Our vehicles aren't that heavy.

I've now got a 2 post lift, but will keep the Jack's and stands.

At the other end of the scale, I saw a kit at Home hardware which includes a jack and stands for approx $50.

I've got a set of Esco's too. Very stable and strong. My only beef is that they're very tall even at the lowest setting. My jack has to be at its max lift to fit them under.

I use a Michelin floor jack that I bought from crappy tire on sale. The thing is yuge. Very stable and easy to move.
