Well at least 50 percent more and shorter gearing but that's a project for fall winter. I want to drive the car now .

Sure you can. There are boosted air cooled beetles out there. They are more outlaw than your anemic 356.
They even sell kits that can't be that difficult to make it fit to your engine. Won't me more difficult that making it from scratch like I did.
