where do I get high octane gas in downtown T.O.?
The way I understand the manual I should be using 92 octane, where do I find it?? I live downtown, west of bathurst.

Hey,
Shell V-Power (91 octane) for our air-cooled cars. The V-Power has no ethanol. I've read that the ethanol degrades the internal seals/o-rings over time.
When I lived downtown I went to the Shell on Bathurst just south of (is it King?) on the west side of Bathurst.
Another good thing about this is that no matter where you are, you can usually find a Shell station!

If you're running a really high boost application, sunoco 94 is probably better for detonation resistance, but it has ethanol, where as Shell 91 V-power doesn't.
Europe and Japan use different octane rating systems so there is equivalence to US/Canadian 91 and 94.
Japan and Europe use a system called RON or Research Octane Number to determine the octane rating of their gasoline, while stateside we use a system called AKI or Anti-Knock Index to determine gasoline's octane rating... Interestingly, to further complicate things it would seem that USA AKI system is actually derived from the average of the RON system and another more complicated system referred to as MON or Motor Octane Number. RON+MON/2 in otherwords for me to find out what 92 US octane means in RON, multiply the foreign RON Octane rating by 0.95 and you will have the US AKI equivalent.
( RON Octane Rating x 0.95 = AKI Octane Rating )
98 RON Octane x 0.95 = 93.1 AKI Octane (US measure)
100 RON Octane x 0.95 = 95 AKI Octane (US measure)
Long and short of it: if your car is stock, don't over think this too much. Just fill it up with 91 octane dino juice and drive.

The Porsche dealer in Vancouver attributed the codes I threw (before doing the mods) were caused by using 91. When I switched to 94 the code throwing stopped. I was using Shell 91 but to get the 94 had to go to Chevron.

Turbos run higher compression (youre packing in more air and fuel) and thus need a higher octane rating to avoid pre-detonation. Essentially, the lower the octane, the easier the fuel becomes to detonate by compression rather than spark (which is why diesel is very low octane fuel - no spark in a diesel engine the combustion occurs when the fuel/air mix is compressed enough). Pre-detonation is bad.
In a 3.2, my personal opinion is to go for non-ethanol containing fuel over highest octane. You can also get chips programmed specific to the fuel you are using... Do a search on "Steve Wong chip".
