No progress yet as I've been busy with another project that I bought fixed and sold to generate funds for this project. Also been busy with getting my snowmobile and it's trailer ready for the season but in the next week or so I will re start the work on the engine. I still want to tear down the engine completly before deciding what to do next.

Just read through this entire thread - some of it twice. Pretty cool.
I've had my 2000 996 C2 cab for almost a year and have put about 8k kms on it (it's got about 120K total).
I'm planning on putting a clutch in it in the next few weeks - hopefully before the weather gets too nice. While in there, I want to do the IMS and RMS as well. There was some good info here - thanks for that.
I'd like to join the Cambridge chapter of RL. I already have the same ATV lift as Imo000 - hopefully that helps...

To the OP, could you repost the link to your new thread on Part 2 of this adventure? I can't get to it from the one posted earlier.
I read this thread with a lot of interest, but one thing that concerned me when I saw you weren't going all the way into the engine was the condition of the rod bearings from the impact of the pistons bashing valves.

The project will restart as soon as I'm done changing the water pump on my buddy's 996 (in a week).

That ATV lift isn't mine but I've used that more than the owner. Stick with a tested and proven IMS bearing kit. Mine setup is still in the experimental phase. Will post results as soon as I dig more into the engine. Send Clive your email and he will add it to the half a doze other ones from Cambridge.

I can't PM here for some reason. I left a message for Clive on his home page here with my email.
Talk soon,

Finally, after 2.5 years I have restarted this project. Going to update the thread in the other forum soon. Any questions, post them here or on the other forum and I will try to answer them.

It's a typical "life got in the way" story. Son started go kart racing and that ate up a lot of my time also building engines for him, setting up and taking care of the kart. I must say it is an extremely fun sport to be in in you are a gearhead. Also, I wasn't sure what I was going to do about getting a replacement IMS bearing (the one that I used didn't last) so the project was put on hold.

So where are you in your thoughts on the IMSB? I have a Boxster that I think will be getting a new IMSB this Spring. After changing my mind every time I read a new article on the IMSB problem I am currently leaning towards the FVD Brombacher kit. It seems to be well received in Europe, is "reasonably" priced, replaces all the necessary parts and uses a good old fashioned steel roller bearing in the double row version. My thinking is the bearing only could be replaced if I have to go in to change the clutch in the future.
