Need a new clutch, shopping around
Hey!
So my clutch is kinda acting sketchy so I am looking to have it replaced. I am looking for some shops around the Kitchener Waterloo area, but I will still venture to Toronto and London if needed. A local shop here in Waterloo wanted $3000, but it seems that includes the clutch, IMS and the instal for all of that. My car has 105 000 km now, so im not too sure if an IMS is really necessary for the money.
But I would love to hear other peoples thoughts!
Thanks!
Braden

$3 is wayyy too much...
Get the Clutch Kit from the US from Suncoast or Sonnen Porsche. Take the parts to Autowerks and have them Install it. Have them inspect the RMS and IMS at the same time. If all looks good Leave it Alone. If it needs Attention have them Change it.
Talk to Jake Ok on here, he just went thru all this. look at this Threads. Maybe he can give you some pointers

You mean Bridge St near Logel's.
I'm one of Uli's mechanics at Furtmair Auto. It sucks to hear that some people may have had a bad experience with Uli.
I would STRONGLY recommend replacing the IMS bearing while your clutch is out, you'r going to save big time money in the long run.
Last week I worked on a 996 with 56,000kms. IMS bearing was torn to shreads, all 4 camshafts were out of time when I had the crankshaft locked on TDC. Valves bent, no compression.
New long block from Porsche....$23,000.
Welllllllll worth the extra money involved to install the LMengineering IMS kit

How much extra is the IMS? IIRC, it's about $300 or $400 on a boxster. If the engine and tranny are out for a new clutch, I'd think you'd be nuts not to do the IMS. The labour to get a 3.2 engine in and out at a shop is a full day - I can't imagine a 996 engine and tranny would be any less. Why chance having to pay that a second time, vs. having the peace of mind that you won't ever have to?

996's have a few different configurations of engine and trans combo's which of course make doing the IMS or even transmission removal different.
For example, M96.03 engine uses an #12 allen wrench to loosen bank 4-6 timing chain tensioner. It is buried under the A/C compressor. No way to loosen that tensioner without removing the compressor, which takes time.
Now an M96.02 engine uses the normal 32mm nut and it accessable without removing too many hoses, much easier, less time.
From what I have come across so far, all boxster engines use the 32mm nut for bank 4-6 timing chain tensioner.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just going by memory of the last few IMS install's I've done. I see alot of Porsche's in a day and its hard to keep track.
Oh also, most times the engine in Boxsters and 996's do not have to be removed to do the IMS. Depends what all else may need replacing though.

Not personally no.
The only complete failure I have seen in person is the 56,000kms 996 thats in our shop now waiting for the new longblock coming from Porsche. I believe its a MY 2002.
All other IMS kits I've done were strictly because the trans was out or the owner just felt they wanted the peice of mind that thier car has the upgraded bearing.

Uli is a great and standup guy... and without question one of the best and fastest track drivers you will ever meet... at his best he would put more then a few pro drivers to shame.
