I agree, don't mater how they do it. If you don't have to shift yourself then your driving an automatic.
There really in no point in even having the ability to do your own shifting. Since the PDK computer does a perfect job in selecting the gears for you and it even can be switched from nice and easy to sport mode.
Driving one everyday I'd find my self sipping a java and not thinking about driving. That's is exactly what I'm looking for in a sports car. That's why for me manual is the only way to go for a sports car.

Agreed
My neighbor bought a new Chevy Camero and I asked if it was stick or automatic--she said "both"--as the car has some form of paddle shifting in it.
To keep the peace, I remained quite on the issue. But quite frankly, if the car can shift for ya, and/or clutch for ya--its an automatic. Many people out there dont know how or wont drive a stick-and are going to be more comfortable driving an automatic or paddle shifter or whatever you want to call it-which is fine. But please, call a spade a spade--its an automatic!

Clive you are almost winning the debate, plus several guys agree with you

True about the pedal, but it won't shift for you unless you want it too.

I can have fun with stick shift or PDK, but.... just saying.

Are you saying all F1s are automatic?

I think you mean at red line, right? Definitely not before.
And I wouldn't care to hit the limiter or blow up the engine.

Yes it shifts at red line, which is what I do in manual anyways. The engine was designed to go to red line. That what it's there for. In fact at the track I have seen it go past redline without hitting the limiter when running up hill.
It'll downshift when revs get to low as well

I routinely hit the limiter on my car .. I am not worried about that at all . not that i have a super high output engine or anything .. I would worry more about the free revs on a downshift ..
Besides John I totally agree which would be faster .. if i wanted oit to be the quickest like Greg stated I would pick the PDK. but I just want my cars manual because i feel moe connected to the experience that way and I think no clutch means it would just shift automatically.

I have a Maxima with a shift gate .. works exactly the same way except with a shifter instead of paddles or buttons .. but if I don't do anything it will shift for me .. ( ugly experience though )

Except there is no shifting as it has no gears...it's a CVT. The gates and paddle on the Max are there to make you think it's got gears. Just computer wizardry at work!

Clive, let's create a mod to install a pedal clutch on a PDK.

Jumper my point exactly, it will not shift for you, unless you red line, which
is different than automatic.

Soooo, with PDK, I am still in control of when it shifts, in M mode.

Throwing in my 2 cents...

If you put an automatic in sport mode it changes the shift points to higher up in the revs... which is still an automatic. In my car (no sport mode exists) if I'm really aggressive with the throttle the poor thing goes past redline before it shifts. It doesn't have tiptronic or shiftronic or PDK or anything.

If I'm in third and I floor the throttle in my automatic jetta it drops down to second. If I accelerate slowly in third it stays in the same gear... so essentially I'm in control of when it shifts... but it's far from a manual.

Actually, funny story... my roomate came home one night all proud that she was "shifting gears" in her automatic by flooring it and causing the computer to drop it down a gear... we gently told her that the car was just responding to the computer's rules.
