Default PDK vs. Manual

If you were offered a free 2010 911, what would you choose, PDK or Manual?

The feeling of driving an old school manual can never be replaced by fancy auto gearbox. At least that's how I feel.

The PDK is a step into the future. I'd go there.

Love the PDK, but I'm old school and really enjoy the mechanical interaction of a 6sp manual so I'd stick with it. Oops, I clicked in the wrong box and voted for the PDK! Must be a Freudian slip!

In the fall I got to participate in the Porsche cross-country promo--I drove the new 911, Boxter S, Caymen s, Cayenne turbo, Carrera 4 S. Most were available to test in both PDK and 6-speed (except the Cayenne--which was tip). Overall, I was impressed by the PDK--it is a huge step above automatic or tiptronic--very crisp, no power loss whatsover. In fact--it was way faster than I could ever hope to shift. However, it still felt "fake"--no driver input. I agree with jumper--if I was buying for the track, I think the quick shifts that the PDK offers is the way to go. But seeing that I'm not a track-specialist, I think that the involvement of the stick shift allows you to more fully enjoy the car. Personally, a P-car to me is all about driving experience-and the stick gives you more of that experience.

How does one get to participate in such a terrific event?

In 2009, there was the "Porsche World Roadshow" held at Mosport by PCL and the "Tour de Porsche" held by each of the 12 dealers.
You need to be invited by your dealer. Start shopping for that new 2010 997 and you'll probably get to go next time.

I've never experienced the PDK, but I already don't like it.... maybe I need to keep more of an open mind...

I just saw some youtube video and the host of the show said that Porsche was considering phasing out the manual option, and having everything PDK in the next 5 years... I dunno if that's BS, but...

Phil, I don't think my dealer has those kinds of connections... OH, you mean Porsche dealer, as in Pfaff Woodbridge... OK, cool.

I love both, but I prefer performance, (and I feel I am still connected with)- PDK for me.

I know the PDK is faster and smoother than any person, but the extra feeling of being connected to the car - gotta go manual - besindes, I'm a lefty, so my left foot needs something to do too!

A Porsche with PDK is an easier sale at home - "even you'll be able to enjoy it dear"..or something to that effect....
