Wholesale price of gasoline
I've often wondered the difference between retail and wholesale and just now wandered to a Petrocanada website thats lists the Rack Rate for different grades in various cities. Enjoy.

I guess there must be a ton of overhead then.

Taxes generally account for an avg 35% of the pump price with the worst two cities tax wise being Montreal and Vancouver. We sell a lot of product into the channel, most stations could not survive on gas retailing alone. Snacks, drinks, car wash, lottery, smokes etc are absolutely essential components of the overall profit of a station. Think about how often you are asked for the add on sale at a gas station...

The worst is when that person doesn't move their damn car away from the pump while purchasing 50 lottomax tickets, a case of beer, a carton of Peter Jacksons while trying to process the payment using a maxed out creditcard. Better yet the local Esso near me (I still like the my aeroplan points) always has the pay of the pump option "broken" during peak hours forcing you to pay inside where you might buy something else like a car wash that doesn't actually wash your car

A bit of searching and you'll find where the margins are in gasoline. It's quite competitive with no ongoing unreasonable profits. There is no money in gas stations. What really peeves me is the 25 to 30 cent a litre difference between Canada and the US........our higher taxes, expensive regulation, an inability to build pipelines, etc..

A couple of years ago in Mississauga guys approached me at the pump with a once in a life time killer deal on brand new Audio Systems, their boss had over shipped and they didn't want to take it back to the shop. Ssshhhhur guys,
