On a bad day my commute takes 10 minutes and I'll have to come to a stop at an intersection...

...and I've got a 100 km/hr twisty rural road about 2km away...

I've had he Cayenne S for about 9 years and it's devalued heaps in that time but the depreciation curve is now shallow and it's still much like new with only 137k on the clock, me having done the last 100k. It's very handy. Next weekend for example I'm towing a dual axle furniture trailer to Wellington and back to help my son and his girlfriend move. A piece of cake with this machine. Figured it's better to keep than to sell at this point.

I don't need to sell one yet but just doing a bit of practical testing in case I went down that route.

Doug I have a heated seat kit (a good quality one) I bought in 2010 and never fitted to the bucket seats in my 993. It is for passenger and drivers seat and comes with everything needed. It can be retro fitted to your 964 seats easy enough. Its yours cheap if you want it....

Regards the Cayenne good point about the depreciation. The 964 should be appreciating - so from a purely fiscal perspective the boxster is the fastest depreciating. Im not sure which you are using the least of the three but maybe that should determine an outcome should you wish to make life simpler, free up some space and reduce the incident of unexpected costs.

Sorry Paul but that's 50 shades of wrong!

Yep - there are others that work but for a standard NB they are the ones.

I think you are right............

Walter, in at CCS this morning; was good to see the 996 finally getting the attention it deserves. The pinning work they're doing looks very good. Are you getting anything else done while the engine is out?

I've decided to try Lola (1990 964 C2) as my DD for a week or two. If I needed to sell one of my p-cars I want to have a feel for living with the old girl on a daily basis vs my 07 Boxster S. Sure is different to the modern Boxster in heavy traffic with a heavy clutch and its lack of creature comforts. Makes me wonder what they were like compared with other cars back when new in 1990. I think at that time I drove a new silver Mazda 323 1.6l manual and thought it was just great.

There really is plenty of head turning I hear it coming character in the 964 in 2014 though.

Doug you need to sell that Boxster and buy a 964 comfort spec with tipo, sunroof, air con and heated seats for the streets. Get Lola on a track diet of RS goodies and enjoy best of both worlds!:reckon: Save the leftovers for an engine rebuild in the future or invest in the next APPL or buy 10 Integras.

Track days are looking more and more fun. Targa car should be done by 19th. Booked in for HD. Good to catch up with BB and others. This weather is making me stir crazy.

^^^ Nice lateral thinking!

Certainly arrests the boxster depreciation cycle although upkeep on 2 x 964 may dispose of any balance sheet benefits in the medium term.

Getting the red 964C2 more track focussed is probably just a matter of some Z221, optimised geo, some brake disc cooling systems, a couple of lightweight bucket seats with a harness bar and 6 point harness for the driver and some selective weight reduction including RS door panels. My guess is $8-10K will give you 1.18s at HD. Put some further $$$ in the kitty for a top end rebuild in the future and you are track ready for a few years to come :-).

You could pick up a good tipo likely in 30s, leave 8-10K for some maintenance upgrades, heated seat elements, decent audio and you too can imagine yourself as the star of Californication on a daily basis :-)

I can add another option. Leave Lola as is and develop the 2kcup idea with a view to racing, including an Enduro or two.

Simon has just rung me as happens a lot recently regarding racing after he talks to some of you! He is very impressed with the RSG dynamic and suggests we do more. I think a developed 2kcup entry is a possibility.

Btw not sure what motivated Matt G but Simon noted he was driving like he owned the track at 1:44.5?

Thanks for the heads up Jake. Robert let me know this morning so just got back from looking her over. On the engine front, beyond pinning and liquid metalling those coolant fittings, there was just one little oil breather pipe that was getting soft and will be replaced. Costing some preventative maintenance on the tranny (probably fluid and a couple of seals) while in there too. It had a major service and birthday upgrades only about 9 months ago so not much else needed - otherwise plugs, coils and DVs would be on the list too.

Mark - took up your offer of looking NINEXI over while there. That's some purposeful and tidy machine, even without looking underneath her.

John McM 07-07-2014 08:42 PM

Walter, any further thoughts on NVH? Generic
Engine mounts seem very reasonably proved.

Garry D 07-07-2014 08:46 PM

Yes , I have my name down for that one , will be good to meet a few of you .

John - I understand where you are coming from with the 2k cup idea, however I think that the natural progression for the RSG crew is to Porsche racing, whether that be in the series or the Enduro events, Arrow Wheels and GTRNZ. Main reason for that being the social side which is a huge factor in choosing the right kind of racing. On a weekend where you have maybe 3-4 15 min races there's a lot of waiting around so it makes a lot of sense to hang out with the people that share your passion. Plus the dinners out and beers afterwards - all part of the racing experience.

From a sheer functional POV, cheap 2k cup makes sense but I reckon the all round experience is more important.
