Default Racing Seats - Durability & Recommendations?

I'm in the process of searching for some racing seats and will be giving Sparco & Momo seats the "butt test" over the next few weeks. I'd like to look at Recaro seats as well but my budget is focusing me on the Momo & Sparco seats for now.

One thing that has concerned me is that I've seen several posts on Momo seats that they don't hold up as well as the Sparcos and that their fabric wears much quicker than other seats.

Is this factual? Have others seen this?

Any comments on the Sparco Touring seat? My neighbor is putting these in his Vette and was curious on thoughts given their very large side head bolsters/supports.

Beyond that, I'd appreciate and any comments on seats that will help me make the right decision.

Thanks much.

Momo seats don't hold up well. I have a Momo Acropolis seat. The plastic trim pieces where the belts go through came apart about two weeks after I bought it. The Recaro seats are very good but make sure you fit in them before you buy one. I have an SPG Racer seat and it is tight. I don't have any first hand experience with other seats although I have heard Kirkey seats are pretty good.

Hi Rick:

Although you might not want to hear this, I'd strongly advise you to save enough $$$ to buy Recaros's.

I've installed hundreds of seats in the past 25+ years and Recaro stands head & shoulders above all others. You get what you pay for; no exceptions.

Save your bucks and get the best. You will never regret that decision.

The Recaro's are the way to go... Around this time of year I find it is possible to find a few lightly used recaros for sale as people de-comission the track cars. I was able to put a pair of like new seats into my car for less then the cost of a new one.

Rick,
I had my heart set on buying Recaro SPG's for the longest time. When I finally tried one, I ran into a big problem. My a$$ fit fine, but my shoulders rose up above the harness holes. Recaro's have REALLY thin slots and this can be a problem for taller folks. I'm only 6'2". The seat I ended up buying is a Sparco Evo 2. Sparco's have much taller slots for the shoulder harnesses and are thus a much safer fit. Plus I was also able to get the Sparco in dark blue to match my car, which I really like

Steve,

Are you aware of anyone that can recover a Recaro seat? I have the Porsche version of the Pro Racer SPG in my Cup car and the fabric has been worn by the belts and window net in places, so the foam is starting to come out. Replacement is 2400 from PMNA, so I'd prefer to have it recovered. I contacted Recaro NA but they don't do recovering.

Hi Karl:

I'd contact Recaro N.A. and see if they still do that; they used to,.........

If not, ask them if they will sell you the material and find a local upholstery shop.

I would check out the PCA website and talk to some of the club racers... this time of year they are unloading last years equipment getting ready to buy things for next year.

A number of people around here like the Kirkey 'road race' seats, and they've recently come out with a similar design (intermediate), which is not quite as elegant as the regular road race, a little heavier, and a little cheaper.

I like my Kirkey road race seat very much, and yes the new "intermediate" version appears to be a great alternative: it is exactly the same seat, but without the detailed CNC machining to remove a pound or so of weight. I removed a Sparco Evo2 to replace with the Kirkey, still have one as a passenger seat, and my opinion is that it is pretty junky in terms of workmanship and materials.
While visiting F1 Boston 2 weeks back, I studied RJ Valentines new Viper Competition coupe sitting in the lobby. It has a terrific looking seat made by a New Zealand company called Racetech. Appears very well made, and has a large wraparound headrest.

By the way that Viper has lots of nice looking parts possibly adaptable to any racecar: a fabulous cf splitter, slick tow hooks etc, makes me wonder if I can order at my Dodge dealer...

I would recommend looking at the Cobra Imola seats. I have the Imola2 and have found the quality to be superior to anything else in its class. Kevlar and fiberglass (not just fiberglass), stiff and the fabric is very high quality.

Ultimately, I went with the Cobra's due to the butt test. I was the most comfortable in these. You sit 'in' them, yet they dont have very high sides so you can get in and out of them easily.

The kirky intermeadiate is 1/2 the price of the road race seat and is very nice (two for one).

The road race does have machined billet pannels where as the intermeadiate is all stamped.

The seat area of the road race extends slightly farther forward.

The weight difference is minimal.

They both come in three widths

ordered with the deluxe velour cover they are almost impossible to tell apart.

I got mine from Stable energies and have been very happy with them

I also have Kirkey Road Racing seats and love them.

I've never gotten a bad complaint from anyone who's ridden in the passenger seat either. Everyone seems to like them.
