Default what does a gallon of gas weigh?

I know, I could just as easily weigh a gas can, go down to the gas station and buy a gallon of gas and weigh it again to figure this out. Problem is, I don't have a bathroom scale.

My D class 993 weighs 3070 with a full tank. I must weigh 3064 according to the rules. I need to know how much ballast I need to carry to make weight on anything less than a full tank. TIA

John,
I have always used 8#/gallon. Another thing you need to consider is that each track may have a different set of scales and I have seen them be off by as much as 20# compared to the ones we use in the shop. And there is no tolerance, you will be DQ'd if you are one # light or a 100#'s.

When is your first race?

Looks like my memory was right, although it was really interesting to see the range of weight that gas can have.

Greg is right, though; it's best to be conservative. Ask Jeff about getting DQ'd at Putnam last month for weight... (it was Jeff, right?)

I use 6 lbs/gal for gasoline, though it varies depending on the specific fuel. (Water is 8). Like Greg said, scales vary. With SCCA, the 'official' scales are open almost all day - it will save you problems if you weigh your car on their scales before you are checked, assuming PCA supports that. I have seen as much as 30 lbs difference at 1700 total on 2 sets of 'official' scales at 2 different venues.

It wasn't THIS Jeff that got DQ'd at Putman...haven't even been there yet.

I have yet to get a DQ, but was worried at Mid-America as I know I was close.

I use 6lbs. a gallon for a figure and always keep it full so if I do that I'm within 12lbs or so of getting DQ'd.

I have a few parts left to put back on the car since it's "restoration" last Spring - so I figure that will help??

But now that I have TWO racing seats and have gone to a Motorsport Racing suspension, I supposed I'd better do some refiguring?

No doubt!

My first race will be at the Carolina Motorsports Club Race in early November. I can't wait. The car has been raced before by the PO but apparently not weighed. I figure I will add 100# to make sure I am not DQ'd.
BTW it was Eric from Chicago who had a podium finish taken away in his first race.
Thanks for the input.
I wondered what the cage and fire suppression system weighed. Apparently it is very close to the difference between
1. stock seats and race seats
2. stock wheels and tires and Fikses with Hoosiers and
3. stock mufflers versus no mufflers.

I don't think anything else was stripped off (except trunk carpet). AC is all still there.

1 gallon of water equals 8.33 lbs.

1 gallon of gasoline equals 5.8 to 6.5 lbs.

1 gallon of ethanol equals 6.59 lbs.

Hey John...your first race is CMP on November 7 - 8th? Don't add any ballast at all...gamble on weight! Oh by the way, have you registered for it yet? LOL I'm competing in the same race group.

Take the wisdom of the weight to heart. I did the same at Sebring in February and was DQ'd after weighing OK on Roebling Road's scales in December. So, better safe than sorry

For what its worth:
best Summit Point lap with car at 2625# 1:23:4
2840# 1:23:7

best Beaverun lap @ 2625# 1:04:1 second race there
2810# 1:04:7 first race at this track

Point being the additional weight in the right area has little effect. Look at the GTC1 cars (964 cups) adding weight to run in D and turning 1:23:0 at Summit.

I am registered. The last time I looked we were the only D cars. I look forward to meeting you. Are you doing the enduro?

Besides being team owner and founder, I am also team historian, or at least keeper of HWFM moments.

You're right, Eric was indeed DQ'd in his first race.

But Robert is also right. Jeff P. also had a DQ and lost a podium for being 6 pounds under at Putnam in Sept. As I recall Eric was under by more than 6.

When I come in last at CMP will I qualify for the HWFM team?

Absolutely. Sounds like you already have that positive mindset we try to instill in all our teammates.
But it sounds like you may get a podium despite being last.

Have fun and post your experiences.

Hey John;

Still looks like just the two of us in "D" but I do expect that to change. It will be fun running two of the same cars together. I'll be running sprint and enduro. Have you run CMP before? That track has a lot going on all the time and a sprint will be a work out not to mention a 90 minute run. Start getting in shape now. You look to have a long tow for this one...good luck and I'll look forward to meeting you. We have some pretty good folks down here to mingle with.
