Without knowing if this is trip MPG, or overall MPG for some period that includes trailer/no trailer - I'm still dubious. I say this because I have seen the MPG of several vehicles towing open trailers, and it's usually in the 11-15mpg range. My X5 is 11ish. but mercedes is winning F1, so who knows.

With my Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee and open trailer, U-Haul or 18' ATC with a spare set of tires, and BMW 1M I would get 20/21 mpg towing from Philadelphia to VIR or Philadelphia to the Watkins Glen.

I'm curious to see what I will get with my diesel Ram 1500 and Enclosed 24' Intech in the next few months.

2014 Chevy CCSB 4x4 Duramax. Tows a 32ft enclosed gooseneck trailer. Love everything and hate nothing about it. A diesel is far superior in EVERY way to a gasser for towing.

It tows these babies with ease. I do have Firestone airbags with onboard air so i get the 3500 SRW ability with the 2500 ride!

My wife's 2010 BMW X5 35d use to get 14-14.5 towing a 5K lb 2 horse trailer that was a 7'6" interior height. That same truck would get 24-25 unloaded on the highway. My buddy has a GL320 Bluets but his mags are about 14-15 towing a 14x7 enclosed with his motorcycles. I do know the CDIs are better then the Bluets though. Way less issues and easier maintenance.

Those years get horrible gas mileage. I even deleted 2010 3500. You can get the newer model and just stock, gets better mileage and you can still delete that crap.

2005-2007 Ford F250-350 Powerstroke and delete the EGR crap. Newer suspension and a great motor as long as the EGR has been deleted or it has been Bullet proofed. 2004-2004 had issues that they revised for 2005 but the EGR is still an issue so just take it off.

2005-2007 Chevy/GMC 2500-3500 Duramax, Just before all the emissions crap and a fantastic motor out of the box (LB7/LBZ). Allison trans can't be beat.

If you need an SUV:
2001-2002 Ford Excursion with the famous 7.3 Powerstroke. The last of the greats really! The 2002 had the final revisions on the factory tuning but is a unicorn and they charge for it.

Myt buddy has a 2004 V10 Excusion. He did the intake, the exhaust from the front pipes back with 3 inch and a big body Magnaflow and a small resonator, and the Edge handheld tuner and it was night and day. Using the "heavy" tow tune and running 91 made a decent difference. When not towing, he uses the economy tune. You would think that this wouldn't help a gasser but the V10 is tuned very conservative from the factory. He picked up 1-1.2 mpg towing average on our last 2 camping trips. As you know, with that motor, that is a massive difference! LOL

Had to upgrade the shocks to bilsteins (were dead when I bought jt anyways) added a trans cooler and rear sway bar.....been pretty good to me otherwise

Jusy have to get used to the slow acceleration and fighting up hills......not that bad once your used to it but I still lust over a diesel till I see repair bills

Excursion is great...I can fit 4 adults and 4 kids with car seats plus ski gear and room to spare....but now that I have a 3rd kid will have to figure that out
Kids call it the party bus

Next is either a diesel excursion....7.3 or 6.0 with egr etc addressed
F150 eco or a slightly older diesel
Or a dodge diesel

My buddy scored a Duramax 3500 Chevy Savanna Van (RARE!!). Can pull 10K and seat 11 with all the seats in or pull the last 2 rows out and he has a "vamper" setup with a flatscreen and digital ant. Kid is crazy! LOL But it works.

That big block is a great motor and used in a lot of the gasser Class A motorhomes. You will just have poop gas mileage all the time but if just for towing, no biggie, especially for that price. That is a 2500 3/4 Sub so I would make sure you do WDH and possible an anti-sway if needed and you are good.

i have a v10 excursion. mine has under 90k miles so a diesel version would be at least $10k more.... would put you into a much newer MY used f250 diesel.

The Navistar 6.0 was a piece of junk, that would spit out its injector which leads to catastrophic engine failure. The 7.3 does not have near the towing power with a 525 ft lbs torque rating compared to the 800 ft lbs torque of the newer engines.

2014 RAM 3500 Limited Dually, 4x4, Aisin, 3.73's, Cummins pulling a 32 foot ATC gooseneck. Could not be happier with the truck or the way it tows.
