Default Pagid Orange vs Black

I know this topic has been beaten to death many times over, but here it is anyway.

Car has 993TT Big Red calipers and rotors.

I have 9 track days (about 120 mi per day) on a set of Oranges with about 1/4 of the pad left. I like the performance which isn't bad and the life seems to be good. In a search for a less expensive option, I recently tried a set of Porterfield R-4 and got 3 track days on them before they were 1/4 left. The performance seemed similar, maybe a little more feel near lockup, but wear was too quick for my pocketbook.

I've heard the Blacks have a better feel so I'm looking for wear indications and am also interested in rotor wear. I've noticed that after 1 set of Oranges, the rotors are quite cracked, not quite hole to hole, but probably should be replaced.

I should note that I do drive the car to and from the track but am not too concerned with street performance or noise other than the car has to stop ok.

Any comments?

Recently there was a thread praising the black pads. I have used only Pagid Orange on my 993 race only car. I asked a local race shop who races several 993's about moving to blacks. He said they take to long to heat up. They are a better pad for endurance racing, hours on the track in a racing format. The orange pads perform better for short 1/2 hour track sessions.

Try Hawk Blues. Cheaper than Pagid and seem to last fairly well.
I liked their performance over P.O., it was a substantial improvement.

Also, to help prevent cracks in the rotors, we clean the holes with a drill bit or just blow the dust out with compressed air. We have compaired the Orange Pagids with Performance frictions on two similar cars with roughly same track time and with cleaning the rotors on the pagid equipped car the rotors have lasted double the time.

Two cars compared were 95 993's.
One Original Super Cup car with heavy engine and transmission mods.
One Original Street Car with similar mods.
The weight of the cars are also fairly close. With in 200 pounds.

GTP993,

Cleaning after each session? day? I assume that helps the cooling of the rotor?

Well, we usually clean them after the weekend of racing, but if we have the wheels off we will go ahead and do it during the weekend just because we're already there. But it takes a while for the holes to really be clogged. Our philosophy is the less work you have to do at the track the more enjoyful weekend you'll have. So we try to do the work right the first time, when we're in the shop.

I have been cleaing my rotors (with compressed air) every 2 or 3 track days. Does this really make a difference in cooling?

What about the newer Pagid yellow pads? I've heard some good comments on them as an orange substitute.

Hi Bill,

I ran the Oranges at RA over Memorial Day, and the Blacks over Labor Day. IMO, the Blacks worked fine after just half a lap, so I did not see prolonged warm-up time as a significant issue.

I have been running Blacks for the past two seasons on my US Carrera Cup. I ran Orange before that. I have to admit, the blacks are far superior, they didn't take any longer to heat up than the Orange's and they have lasted as long as the Orange ones did as well.

The negative; you need to clean the cross drilled holes regularly. I guess you should be doing that anyway.

I haven't seen any additional wear, which seems to be a popoular reason people don't use blacks.
