"Rush" "The Most Overlooked Movie of the Year"
Daniel Bruhl, who played Nikki Lauda in "Rush," was nominated for his first Golden Globe yesterday for Best Actor.
According to Marlow Stern in The Daily Beast, "Rush" was one of the 13 most overlooked films of 2013.
He writes: "I, like many Americans, have very little interest in Formula One racing, which probably explains why this thrilling Ron Howard film grossed a paltry $27 million in North America. It tells the real-life story of F1 rivals Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) going toe-to-toe during the 1976 season. And Lauda, the cold, calculating Austrian, and Hunt, the gorgeous, hard-partying Brit, couldn’t have been bigger foils. Back then, racing was very dangerous—with one or two drivers perishing on the track per year—and Lauda fell victim to the perilous conditions in Germany. He suffered a terrible crash and was caught in the flames for minutes, leading to burns over his face and much of his body. But, after spending only 6 weeks in the hospital, the determined Austrian returns to the track to take on his nemesis. The performances by Bruhl (especially) and Hemsworth are excellent, as is the lensing by Slumdog Millionaire cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle. And who’d ever thought Howard could make such a sexy, adrenaline-packed movie? "

Three Wheelin'
I LOVED this movie!!! Saw it 4 times in theaters. Glad to see Bruhl getting some recognition for his portrayal of Lauda. My girlfriend rolls her eyes at me every time I start quoting his lines from the movie. For the US was there any question that it wouldn't take off? But, it has to be one of the best racing stories ever told in a theater. Yes, the on track footage was lacking and some details are incorrect, but if you leave those be and immerse yourself in the movie it is fantastic.

First of all, the actor that played Niki Lauda was dead on fantastic!!! I thought I was listening to Lauda from old clips, incredible casting by Ron Howard. The story was good too with not too much in the way of straying from actual events in terms of the crash scene etc.
But $27m is a flop in Hollywood terms especially given how much they promoted the movie in NA. This pretty much guarantees that another racing movie will not be made for a very long time.

Dumb luck that it was released on the same day as "Gravity," which not only had two box office stars (Sandra Bullock and George Clooney), but also generated tremendous buzz and appears headed for several Academy Awards.

how did Rush do overseas, especially in F1 hotbeds like the UK and the rest of Europe? If you have a US flop but it does well elsewhere, is it still considered a flop?

$90 Million in box-office sales is a smash hit based on a budget of $38 million, when you double your budget in profit the studios are very happy. These are not bad numbers based on the number of screens this movie was run on.
